In this week’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger report on the latest rumors of possible deals of the seven Canadian teams before the March 1 trade deadline.
McKenzie indicates that Shattenkirk is more likely traded as a rental and Blues GM Doug Armstrong’s asking price is a 1st rounder, top prospect and something else. Three times in the last year the Blues made a deal conditional on the pending UFA signing a long-term extension. The offer on the most recent deal that was turned down is rumored to be seven years, $42 Million ($6 Million AAV).
Dreger said Toronto, Boston, Tampa and the NY Rangers are in the mix for Shattenkirk.
THE BUZZ – Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman speculated that the team whose offer that Shattenkirk rejected may have been the Tampa Bay Lightning.
It does not appear that Shattenkirk will sign any deal before July 1, which means he is a pure rental. The price that Armstrong is asking is steep, but a team on the cusp (like the Rangers) may pull the trigger and hope that they can sweet talk the pending UFA before the summer.
LeBrun says that pending UFA center Martin Hanzal is attracting interest in the Western Conference and that Coyotes GM John Chayka ideally would like to consummate the trade on the weekend.
The Montreal Canadiens continue to be a team with interest in Hanzal.
THE BUZZ – Arizona likely has numerous offers on the table for Hanzal and wants to make their move well before deadline day, before other forward options potentially could affect the return they are looking for.
Dreger reports that anywhere from 10 to 12 teams are interested in Dallas winger Patrick Eaves.
THE BUZZ – Not surprising that so many teams are interested in the veteran forward who makes $1 Million and has a career high 21 goals.
Stars GM Jim Nill very possibly could parlay Eaves into a top prospect or a first round pick.
The Vancouver Canucks are looking for a young NHL player or top prospect for winger Jannik Hansen. LeBrun believes the Minnesota Wild may be interested, but the Wild may be satisfied with a bottom six forward if the price for Hansen is too pricey.
THE BUZZ – Vancouver is not up against it with Hansen, since the winger has one more year on his contract at $2.5 Million. If Canucks GM Jim Benning does not get an offer that meets his asking price, it’s very possible that they hold onto Hansen until the summer or next season.
McKenzie – The Calgary Flames may be interested in a goalie if prices are reasonable.
THE BUZZ – The Flames are looking for a #1 that would be an upgrade on Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson. The price for Ben Bishop or Marc-Andre Fleury could be reasonable if the Lightning drop out of the playoff race or the Pens need to clear Fleury’s salary to make another move.
LeBrun – Senators looking for top nine rental forward.
THE BUZZ – Ottawa is dealing with a series of injuries up front and will likely dip into the rental market to give them some insurance up front. It is unlikely that they will deal off any of their top prospects in a bigger trade.
