Help me understand something...

The Buffalo Sabres moved on quickly and asked for permission to speak to Dan Bylsma in regards to their open head coach position and Bylsma is free to pursue any coaching gig says the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Well “la-de-frickin’-dah.” I mean, after all... You fired the guy!

This recent development (or at least recent publicity) in the NHL about teams getting compensation or giving permission to a fired coach for him to pursue new employment is frankly… crazy.

So let me get this straight, an organization decides to sign a coach to a contract for a specific term. After a season or two or three, that same organization makes the decision to make a change before the term of the contract ends. The change is made, that coach still gets paid for as long as the term of the contract lasts… but the coach needs permission to pursue another gig and continue his career???

Huh?

I’m sorry, but that just ain’t right. Even though it may be legal… it’s not right, and honestly… why wouldn’t an organization want to get that dead money off their books as quickly as possible?

Then there is the whole “compensation” thing. Same argument applies here… Why would I speak to a fired coach that may cost me a couple of draft picks if I sign him? Again, it may be within the letter of the law, but there is something about this that just doesn’t feel right…

I guess my view may be a little too simple, but I do believe, you fire a coach, you move on… permission and compensation be damned.

Random Notes

- It’s days like today that make me very proud to be a small part of the Predators organization. Almost 100 employees of the Nashville Predators and Bridgestone Arena are fanning out across the community today to sort food at Second Harvest Food Bank or register runners for Nashville’s Color Run or work at any number of community organizations in Middle Tennessee. This is an organization that believes in giving back to the community and days like this are clear demonstrations of that belief.

- Gee… a goaltender complaining about being bumped… THAT never happens in the playoffs.

- Anaheim seems to have the book on Chicago, taking game three was huge for the Ducks, wresting home ice advantage back from the Blackhawks and taking a 2-1 series lead.

- The Chicago power play has to get back on track if they are to win this series… last night’s 0-5 was the difference in the game, that 0-fer includes a four minute advantage in the first period.

- You gotta love the playoffs… there’s a church in Tampa that is using their sign for cheering on the Lightning… the pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church is a big Bolts fan… My favorite one so far? “Turn the Other Cheek… Let ‘em get 2 for Roughing”

- The Hamburglar remains in Ottawa, Andrew Hammond signed a three year contract with the Senators.

- Game Four of Lightning / Rangers tonight and the question is… when will the aliens return Henrik Lundqvist to his body? Twelve goals in the last two games? Yikes…
