Potential Top Four Defense Trade Target For Pittsburgh

There is a perfect storm brewing in the Rocky Mountains and it has nothing to do with the weather. It appears the Colorado Avalanche are thinking about doing something very silly. They are contemplating putting pending RFA defenseman Tyson Barrie on the trade market.

This flies in the face of logic as Colorado could use a few more Tyson Barries in their lineup.

When you have the combination of a very good player hitting the trade market and a not so sharp organization shopping him it creates a perfect storm where you have to act on it.

Colorado famously does not care about modern ways of evaluating hockey talent which opens them up to making mistakes more often than other organizations.

Here is the player they think they don’t need

Recently Jim Rutherford made it clear the team is going to be looking to acquire a top four defenseman. Here it is on a platter. A player who shouldn’t ever be made available is being made available by an organization who can’t see his value.

“At some point (this season), I think we’re going to have to add a top-three or top-four defenseman. It’s something that we’d like to do. Do we have the right top-six guys right now? We might have to make a change there.”

What would Colorado want for their pending RFA defenseman? That is a very hard question to answer because who knows what they are looking for. They should just re-sign Barrie.

This is a situation where Jim Rutherford should aggressively make phone calls to Colorado in order to see what exactly they want. Really good puck skilled defensemen aren’t made available often and Barrie fits that bill.

Colorado strikes me as a team you could sell on grit and work ethic so perhaps this is one of those situations where shopping Patric Hornqvist makes sense.
