Another day of "Where's Vadim?" played out this afternoon, as Shipachyov, who was scheduled to suit up for the Chicago Wolves tonight, was reported out:

Indeed, Shipachyov did not skate in a 2-1 victory for the Wolves over the Milwaukee Admirals.

Afterwards, Sarah Avampato caught with Rocky Thompson, Tomas Hyka, and St. Louis Blues prospect Ivan Barbashev to chat Shipachyov, the NHL/AHL difference, and difficulty of overcoming the language barrier.

Rocky Thompson

On when he found out Shipachyov wouldn't be available:

Rocky Thompson: I found out two hours before the game.

On if he was given an explanation for Shipachyov's absence:

RT: No.

On how he dealt with losing a top-six center just two hours before the game:

RT: We always had contingency plans in place. So you have a person warming up in case that were to happen. We had two rosters on the board. Which is normal.

On Shipachyov's demeanor yesterday in practice:

RT: He was fine. He was fine. There was nothing to talk about because he doesn't speak English. (laughs) And I don't speak Russian. He was fine.

HockeyBuzz: Hey Tomas, how's the adjustment to the AHL going? (HockeyBuzz note: Hyka has seven points in eight games.)

Tomas Hyka: It's been pretty good. So far, so good.

HB: How does the AHL's level of play compare to the NHL pre-season's?

TH: In the NHL, it's more skill, more passing. It's faster, obviously. Here, it more chip the puck and work hard. Battle.

I'm trying to find my game. Teammates are helping me. It's good. I'm really happy that I can play with [Barbashev and Sterling]. I think we kind of find each other; in the last two games, we've had so many scoring chances. Hopefully, we stay together.

HB: When Vegas sent you down, what was their message to you?

TH: I was really surprised that I stayed there as long as I did. It was just, you can't stop working hard, you have to compete hard every single moment. Because you never know when you can get called up. Work hard, work for the team, play your game the best that you can.

HB: How are you enjoying Chicago so far?

TH: I went with my fiancee to downtown to see a couple places. My buddy plays for the Blackhawks, Jan Rutta, so we hang out. We're going to go around with more Czech guys -- because there are a lot of Czech guys who are playing here -- going to hang out. So far, it's a nice city, I like it. Most of the guys are staying in the same place, it's good that we can be together.

Ivan Barbashev

HockeyBuzz: Ivan, you moved to North America when you were 16. You didn't know any English. How difficult was that transition?

Ivan Barbashev: It was pretty difficult for me, especially knowing no English. With every year, I was just getting better, I was learning. It was hard work for me. I'm glad I learned a little bit. I can feel it's getting better.

HB: Did you feel like it affected your play, this transition?

IB: No. My style of hockey, physical, it made life a little easier for me. But first couple months was tough.

HB: Of course, Shipachyov is in same boat, except he's 30, not 16. Do you think it might be harder for older person to come here and adjust?

IB: He's going to learn English quickly. It's just going to make it easier for him to be honest. But I didn't get a chance to meet him yet.

Sarah also shared some player observations from tonight:

Tomas Hyka

Good smooth zone entries. His line looked better as game went on - seemed to start with a lot of missed connections.

Griffin Reinhart

Paired with Theodore on the top pairing. Those two play well together - lots of good communication, great at covering for each other when one goes off to cover another Milwaukee player. Reinhart stopped a great chance for Milwaukee when a puck got turned over essentially in front of Chicago's net. He was on ice for both Chicago goals.

Shea Theodore

Every time I look at Shea Theodore, he's making something happen. Beautiful zone entries from him. You watch him and definitely see easily why he should be in the NHL.

Tenacious in the corner. All over a Milwaukee player, keeping him from being able to make any pass or movement to get the puck to a teammate.

Jake Bischoff

Early 3rd period, great stretch pass up the ice but the forward he was passing to couldn't corral the pass. Good vision to make those plays. Often paired with Lindbohm.

Sometimes would like to see him get more involved in the play. There were more than a few moments where it seemed like he was watching too much. Could have been more aggressive.

Good skater. Generally took short shifts, especially in the third seemed to be used a lot in offensive zone situations.
