Backstrom Steals The Show, Leads Flames To Win Over Wild In Season Finale

The Calgary Flames concluded their season in style on Saturday night as they turned back the clock and made a 3rd period comeback en route to a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.

The Good

- In what was probably the last game of Niklas Backstrom's NHL career he stole the show against his former team, no less. He stopped 35-36 - including 11 shots on Minnesota power plays - and put forth one of the best goaltending performances the Flames have seen all season.

- Patrick Sieloff scored the first goal of his career. It was a fluke, obviously, but it still counts the same and is a moment Sieloff will never forget. I don't know how much of a future he has with the team but it's always nice to see people live out their dream.

The same can be said about Turner Elson, who also recorded his first NHL point against Minnesota.

- The Winnipeg Jets upset a Los Angeles team still playing for 1st in their division and, as a result, they remain ahead of the Flames in the standings. Heading into the lottery the Flames are slated to pick 5th and have an 8.5% chance of winning top spot.

The Bad

- The Flames would have finished 4th last if they lost the game and, in reality, they should have. The Wild out shot the Flames 36-25 and out chanced them 33-17 (16-5 in terms of high-danger looks). The only reason the game was close is because their goaltending was excellent (go figure).

It was the last game of a rough year so I'm not going to pile on with any more negatives.

Stat Of The Game

There is a 100% chance the Flames will go out and get a legitimate starting goaltender this summer.

Now that another season is in the books I just want to thank you all so much for following along throughout the year. I couldn't do my job without you guys and your support is what makes all of this worthwhile. I hope that you enjoyed my coverage and will continue to stick with me through what should be a fun summer.
