Another Sale Adding To The Gretzky Lore...

Another week, another notable sale in the memorabilia world! While it is certainly not out of the ordinary to see the name "Gretzky" attached to such deals, the story behind last weeks auction item is from an era of "The Great One"'s career that we are not accustomed to attaching high end sales to.

You see, this was not something pulled from Gretzky's time in the NHL. WHA perhaps? Nope. Junior? Not even! How about when Wayne was playing for the local Brantford minor hockey team...and was only 13 years old? Bingo. May seem like a stretch to be auctioning off equipment from a 13 year old, but what if it was the stick a young Gretzky scored his 1000th goal with? Well apparently that garners some interest!

This story from the Canadian Press delves into more details:

The hockey stick that a 13-year-old Wayne Gretzky used to score the 1,000th goal of his lifetime sold for $38,838 (U.S.) at a recent sports memorabilia auction.

The Koho-brand stick, signed in blue ink by the Great One after he scored the landmark goal in 1974, was sold to an anonymous bidder Thursday at a sports auction managed by Heritage Auctions.

The stick was being auctioned for the first time. It had belonged to the family of Ron St. Amand, Gretzky’s coach on the Brantford Turkstra Lumber squad. Gretzky gave the stick to St. Amand after the game.

“This is a great price and a very unique piece of memorabilia, certainly a house record for a Gretzky stick sold at Heritage from any period of his playing days,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions at Heritage. “Most of us, when we’re 13 years old, are not producing future pieces of great memorabilia, obviously.

“Gretzky, however, was already headed for immortality by the time he was 13. The result is that this stick, which scored his 1,000th goal, is now an important artifact relating the greatest skater the NHL has ever known.”

An unbelievable sale were it anyone other than Gretzky I would think! What a display piece it will be though. Can't say I wouldn't mind having that mounted in my home at all! In the end, another huge number tagged onto "The Great One" that will not soon be overtaken...
