No. He's never really been into school. I'm not throwing that kind of money away unless he's serious about it.
- mayorofangrytown

I have a friend whose son decided after a year in college that he was wasting his dad's money. He went into the service (which I found very scary) and is now a highly skilled IT guy who works on weapons systems and other programmable military things in the field. He made it through one tour in Afghanistan (even scarier) and is there again. Fingers crossed. He's really smart and will have lots of choice when he decides to come out of the service. And he's built a big on-line family in a gaming culture where he participates in a program "Desert Bus for Hope" to raise money for Child's Play. There are other ways to go. But if you are to succeed in any of them, commitment is key. Finding what you'd do even if you weren't paid to do would be the dream.

Quote Bill:
By comparison, the day the Edmonton Oilers talked about Justin Schultz's "Norris Trophy potential" after a brief time in the NHL was more or less the point where they ruined him; possibly for good.

Do you really think a comment from a GM can actually ruin a player?

It has to be multiple factors. Maybe he wasn't that great to start with. Playing him too soon on a team that was perpetually losing couldn't help. I do agree with the way Hextall parses his praise and wants players to earn and appreciate what it is to be in the NHL by spending time riding the buses in the AHL.

- Marc D

If you look at that comment as the tip of the iceberg, then yes. Meaning, thats how they felt about him, so thats how they treated him. And god only knows what they told him in private, and maybe it did affect how much they played him as well. One thing we don't know is the kids mental make up, maybe those expectations were too much too soon. Remember Jim Carey???

And I totally agree with Hextall parsing his praise for the youngsters too.

Under promise, over deliver...

How would it make that person dumb?
- jmatchett383

Maybe I mistook what he was implying and that's a pretty big maybe. I very much understood where you were coming from when I brought up the possibility of needing a specialist in certain areas of the game, I just didn't like the quote "You know he'll never understand where your coming from, right?" I suppose I'm a sensitive person but I really felt that was uncalled for.

What is the consensus on the 2016 World Cup of Hockey? The rosters looked stacked. Will the players be into it? I'm sure guys are going to get injured and miss games for their NHL teams.

I only saw the 3rd period last night against the Pens, but man, the Caps looked good. Down 1 goal with 8 minutes left, the Pens were only able to generate one decent scoring chance. The Caps completely shut them down. They're big, skilled and fast and pretty deep up front. With Holtby in goal, as long as their D stays relatively healthy, they are going to be extremely hard to beat.

I very much want the Caps to win it all should we not make the playoffs. I think they're the total package from top to bottom. Although I don't understand the Brooks Laich deal.

agreed. I am jealous of Bill (I suck at writing) but I devote a bunch of my time to the Flyers anyway, it would be great to get paid for it.

best of luck to your friend

No doubt about that. I assume it will be competitive. I guess it will be similar to the Olympics, but just wonder if the players will be motivated to bring their A games.

I like Jags answer about playing. In so many words, he wouldn't play even if he scored 80 goals this season.

Not if they wanted Winnik on their team

no one should feel bad for him because he is engaged to Julianne Hough

I like it, but not thrilled with the idea of "Europe" and "North American Under-23." You're gonna have guys from Czech Republic and Slovakia, their version of Canada/USA and Finald/Sweden, playing together for no particular national recognition. Similarly, if you're from North America but can't crack Team USA/Team Canada, regardless of age, you shouldn't be playing. Again, this is the "World Cup" but these 2 teams aren't representing any particular country (it also gives Canada/USA more than 1 team full of players). I understand it's all about money, though. so I get it.

That wasn't my point, but I don't think he was calling you dumb. There are concepts I don't understand (for instance, how can some radioactive rods power a city), but I don't think that makes me dumb.

Yeah, except Latvia wouldn't be in. It would likely be Switzerland (the team that beat Canada) and Slovakia (declining, but still a power). Hell, no one expected Czech Republic to win the Olympics in 1998, or Belarus to beat Sweden in 2002, or Germany to beat Czech Republic in 1996.

In truth, I don't know Scoob and I'm not going to pretend like I do. If he didn't mean it that way, I have worldly idea what else he could have possibly have meant but to say I'll NEVER understand what you were saying is a pretty bold statement in itself.

I'll let this die now.

I get it can happen, I am jsut saying this format clearly increases the overall talent of each player involved. Whether they actually "play for their country" or just dont care remains to be seen. I am actually excited to see the U23 team though
