You can say you find the tanking revolting and repulsive, but no rational argument can be made that the team isn't in a much better position now than it would have been had they not embarked on this strategy.

How many years did the Spurs tank to get better?

Also I know there is a lot of people just assuming Embiid will be ok but I don't like bigs who have injuries.

To win games, they must score more goals then they allow

I think you mean Oden.

The Spurs tanked once and got Duncan. We should all be so lucky.

The Spurs tanked at precisely the right time, got lucky in the lottery and got to pick Tim Duncan.

I'd go with another example, if possible.

its funny but had Mason played the last few games giving up one bad goal a game like Neuvirth has, people would be screaming for Neuvirth. the lack of love for Mason who has been good from day one of the trade for the most part puzzles me.

i like both of those goalie guys, i'm all for riding the hot hand while mason is supposedly nursing some inury.

I don't think Mason has been right, mentally or physically, all year. And by "mentally", I mean that off ice thing that kept him out for a while. There's no telling that could be impacting him, even now (whatever it happens to be).

They sucked out loud for a few years before they drafted Robinson.

And even when they drafted him, they had to wait until his Navy commitment was done.

Sounds like you were in my session (group B?). So I'm really glad I left the notepad at home this year. Good work!

He was taken #1 overall even though the Spurs had to wait 2 years for him to fulfill his active-duty obligation (he went to Navy).

Robinson could have re-entered the NBA draft, but decided to sign with the Spurs instead. The Spurs took a huge risk selecting Robinson #1 overall despite having to miss the next two years and having the option to re-enter the draft after those two years. His talent was just too good to pass up.

This story seems somewhat familiar.

So they tanked several years in a row to get him? I'm just curious, I really don't know.

But really, the Spurs have been really lucky. Getting guys like Ginobli and Parker (and Jackson) late in the draft was key to their success.

i think that's true to some degree, but there's been chatter all season about trading neuvirth no matter how good he's been, which i thought was a terrible idea.

there's zero question mason has been outstanding as a flyer, until this season. he's dipped some, but still overall had a good year, and i'm fine with that. neuvirth - according to my eye test - i don't give a poop about the numbers really, has been better from the outset, and because of that, he gets more of the benefit of a doubt from the fans i guess. fair? not really, given mason's body of work as a flyer.

i don't know what it will take for the fickle/blame the goalie for everything mentality to go away, if ever possible. i would imagine it might take a homegrown kid like stolarz (or someone else) to rise up and become a brodeur, a richter, a csp, mainstay for 10+ years and maybe win a cup or two along the way. the last beloved goalie we have is hextall. it's been 18 years.

i think mason and neuvirth are both terrific goalies and i'm happy to have them. and despite these 3 isolated and different "bad goals" neuvirth has given up in recent games, he's still playing the same way, is locked in, competing on every puck and i don't see any bad habits or problems where he's getting beaten similarly on stoppable shots etc. poop happens during the year. a miscued puck, a bad rebound, a puck that squeezes through the 7 hole on a screen...i put zero stock in that. he's just fine.

they need to play desperate at this stage with 20 games to go. coach has to go with who he thinks gives them the best chance. i have no problem with neuvirth taking the reins if that's what happens. he gives them a great chance every single night.

The Spurs were not a good example to pick about the evils of "The Process".

Actually, the example to pick for a team that didn't tank might be the Warriors.

The Spurs were 115 - 213 in the four years before they drafted Robinson.

That's downright tanktastic.

Or maybe they were just plain bad, I can't really remember.

This seems like the perfect spot to point out that the Senators have signed Scott Gomez.

That's current-day Phillies level. That's just plain bad. Tanking is going 8-50 or whatever the Sixers' record is.
