It's getting really irritating seeing the Leafs consistently have 4 games in hand on the Oil. I just want 30th locked up already! |

i think the leafs now have one of the smartest management groups in the league, especially when it comes to cap management. thats something the leafs have never had before...Ever!
i have no doubt they have thought this out..and have a much better understanding of what they need to do than you or I...Nonis an Poulin are gone.. i dont think fans need to stress over the cap anymore - senstroll
I totally agree. But the author of this piece said he 'didn't think it was a big deal' to burn a year. And it's that I'm responding to.
Personally, I don't think the Leafs will burn an ELC year for Kapanen, Nylander, etc. They will bring them up for the 9 games, which puts a bit of cash in their pockets, gives them a taste of the big time, and will then send them back to the AHL for a good, long playoff run. |

I could see it being even less than 9 depending on how many AHL games that stretch would cover. |

They might for Nylander.. its a ought call, you might save on his next contract long term aav etc.. there are pros and cons to both options.

I'm sure that management has a specific development plan for each player. As long as decisions are based on how the player best develops and not some knee jerk sense that we can make the playoffs or whatever, I am happy. If they truly believe Marner will gain more from another year in London, then I'm happy to keep him there. If they think he would stagnate there, bring him up.
That's what patience is - sticking to the overall rebuild plan and the development plans for individual players. It doesnt have to be just moving as slowly as possible. Also, obviously, plans change as circumstances dictate. If Stamkos is available and willing, go for it if it fits. If a player develops more quickly, move him along. - Canada Cup

They would only miss 6 Marlies games over the next 8 Leafs games. |

idk, i think you need to think about savings on his next contract and player development.
at this point, for a dozen or so games of extra experience, i don't see them burning a year of is elc.
though i do agree there is a judgement call to be made. |

it's certainly a tricky spot to be in.
I think they felt the kids deserved a taste of the NHL and that's why they are there now. they earned it.
as for the ELC year...who knows, time will tell what their master plan is.
perhaps with the leafs not moving as many bodies at deadline - they may have more bodies that are able, and end up sending the kids down back to dominate the A. |

they (SJ) have a very easy remaining schedule and I expect them to be 1st in their division. playing Minnesota 1st round should be easy win for them - MaximusAurelius
Good point. Once they get past the first round it will be a cake walk. |

Totally disagree about burning a year of their ELC.
The argument that they have lots of cap space now is sort of irrelevant, in that it's more about 3 to 6 years from now when these contracts (and/or whatever bridge contracts they sign afterwards) become a cap issue.
i.e. just because we have cap space now, doesn't mean we can be irresponsible with our cap management in a way that could potentially hamstring us in the future.
The cornerstone of the Shanaplan is prudent planning and intelligent execution. Burning a year of all these guys' ELC, so they can play out the end of a meaningless season, is the exact opposite of that. - jnwood2517
Says you
I think I'll defer to Brandon Pridham and the Leafs management on this one. I trust they will make the right decision

I heard Lou on Late Leafs Lunch Monday, and he made it very clear that they didn't plan to let the kids play out the rest of the season. They're just up here for a taste. |

Does it make sense to burn one of Nylanders or Kap's ELC to offset their RFA years, to avoid having to resign multiple RFA's the same year? I would assume this would not be advised, just the only reason I could think that would possibly make sense. Most likely they play max 9 games to get the experience and better them for training camp |
