How about we just stop signing anthems at sporting events all together?
- James_Tanner

I would 100% be ok with this. That being said, I do get perverse pleasure from the way American anthem singers seem to be able to stretch "The Star Spangled Banner" to 5+ minutes.

Wrong again. No NHL team uses walkmans.

Nope!
But they all use defensive defensemen!

So you would rather watch a bunch of random guys, many with very little skill, represent cities that they don't live in?

But you don't like an assemblage of the greatest hockey players in the world playing to represent their home countries?

The skill level of the WC or Olympics is off the chart.

Do you also prefer the Toledo Symphony to the New York Philharmonic? If you do, you don't appreciate talent.

You're arguing this with so much intentional dis-ingenuity that it's ridiculous. Not once did I say anything about the quality of the game - the best game is the one where you care the most about the outcome, and I just think country vs country is stupid for the reasons I outlined.

The reason I cheer for Toronto or Phoenix is because I live with them over years enjoying and debating about their moves and how they go about building their teams - to me that adds in most of the stuff I care about for.

Great blog James. Totally agree with you on this World Cup nonsense. The worst part for me are the injuries that will inevitably happen and will affect the outcome of the entire season.
