Hardly....I for one just assumed he would have a career year playing with better talent and less pressure.havent watched a Pens game all year, wondering what the issue is.

missed chances. he has had atleast 70 COMPLETLY open goal chances and missed them. he could easily have had 40 goals if he just scored 1/3 of the open goal shots. that is honestly the only thing I am really disappointed in kessel at. he has a dangerous shot and it is good but for some reason he just keep on missing open goals over and over and over and over again. never saw he miss that much in toronto.

If it weren't for broken sticks on open nets, posts and just missed open nets in general he'd be in the 30's for goals scored. James Neal looked like poop his first season in the Burgh then scored 40 the next season. I'll give him two full season. It's not just Phil whos stats are down, everyone's stats on the team are down and that had to do with Johnston's poop system for his personell. There's been a lot of personell changes with the team, then a lot of injuries around him and even a mid season coaching change. Personally I dont like his battle level and Im not so sure it'll change. We'll see.

So what, its true. Hags long flowing Fabio flocks blowing in the breeze dont count for much in the playoffs. OMG Kessel will score 50+ with Malkin give the Pens the cup now!!!!!Not even on pace for 25. I might be negative but I'm usually right about the direction of this team, but hey why stop drinking the cool-aid.
- sammy87

You're usually not right about anything and your ideas for fixing things are beyond laughable. How do you fit your ego through doorways? Have 5 year old kids burst it with logic I assume. You've never had one good idea and you're a miserable little bitcch. So keep talking like you think everyone is sitting around waiting to bar what you think.

28 of the teams dont have 87, 71 and 58 either. Its a once in a very rare opportunity to have that type of talent all together and management keeps finding a way to mess it up. Thats why I am frustrated with the Pens. The management/ownership has been pretty bad if not awful. Maybe Mario found a formula that makes a lot of money by having big name players in town with no Cup prospects. If thats the case Im not buying.

Geez...just noticed Phat Phil's stats...is he regressing or is this just a coincidental off year for the 2nd season in a row? Seriously, not trolling.
- TheIronSheik

The majority of the team started the season off atrocious under Johnston. He's playing much better under Sulli. He's got 23 points in 34 games under Sullivan. And in my opinion, he's been playing fine, backchecks, makes some slick passes, I've got no regretzkies. I'd like to see him swing off the wall and snipe some PP goals every now and again, but there are much bigger problems on this team than Kessel.

I also think maybe with having better talent on his line, he tends to defer to Geno or Sid or whoever on the PP and force passes instead of being a little selfish and taking his own shots, or generating anything. He did break someones ankles on Tuesday vs. WSH with a ridiculous stop behind the net, that was entertaining haha

Soooo, Kessel doesn't make the US squad out of the gate and Fleury is left off Canada in favor of Crawford and 12 game Price. I'm a homer for sure, but both should be argued for.

Got this little tidbit of info from DK's site. From the stat guy. Kind of surprised me however I know DP's minutes are sheltered.

• Where is Derrick Pouliot in all this? He hasn’t played anywhere near 600 minutes in the NHL this season, but in 16 games, he’s done quite well in keeping the opponent from generating offense.

It’s a small sample size, but the Penguins have allowed fewer shot attempts (43.8) and scoring chances (21.5) with Pouliot on the ice than any other defenseman on their current roster. When he’s been out there this year, the team plays relatively little in its own end.

As is the case with most of the Penguins’ adjustments this season, the call-up of Pouliot should help them tilt the ice toward the attack.

I find it kind of funny you all love rust but most hated tk when imo rust is a carbon copy who scores less goals. I loved tk and I like rust as well. I don't mind guys shooting a lot though

This also ignores usage, though. I can't imagine they put Cole-Pouliot out against the strongest opposition. I'd imagine they are heavily sheltered. Still, that stat means he's not necessarily a liability, which for a young offensive defenseman is a very good thing.

TK's cap hit for one, and Bylsma's constant desire to play him above his pay grade for two.

Crawford and Holtby will be Vezina finalists this year and are deserving. Luongo and Fleury come to mind for third goalie- naming Price at this point is ridiculous. The guy can't even skate with pads on at this point. What's the hurry in naming him?

Yea that 2.2 he got the season after he scored 20 was way out of range.

That's all I'm saying. All you can do as a young player is do the job when you're on the ice. I think he is.....minus a few bad games. I really believe losing Lovejoy has hurt him unfortunately. I thought those two were playing well together.

I completly agree. cawford and holtby have played really really good hockey this season. so don't think fleury should be namned before them. Price though... he has played a little bit above average his whole career and had a breakout season last season but is now hurt this season and have been for the majority. fleury has played really good hockey too and if it wasn't for a weak DEFENSIVLY defense he would be right up there with holtby and crawford. so fleury should be namned before price but canada homerism will always previal

It may ignore usage, but they aren't the top pairing, so you're not going to put them against the top pairing forward lines. I wouldn't expect Pouliot/Cole to go against top 2 lines, so IMO regardless of usage, it means the kid is generating offense, or pressure at the least. Much like Letang's mistakes, they are more noticeable, but the offense/possession he drives is not noticeable because he's not on the score sheet as much as Letang, it's kind of unfair to him.

One thing that I've noticed (and this in no way is a comparison in skill, just general observation) but the way DP plays reminds me of Paul Coffey, not that he's anywhere near as good as Coffey, but in the way where it almost looks like DP isn't trying at all, but he seems to be in the right spots, making the right plays, but it kinda looks like he's floating out there and putting in minimal effort.

Both goalies are benefiting from the five in front, I don't view Crawford as a top goalie. Fleury carried the Pens for the first half and did the same for the last two years. Again, homer glasses are on but it ticks me off that he doesn't get any recognition for being one of the top goalies.

Oh I don't love Rust by any means, he's probably been one of the most frustrating to watch IMO. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut, but damn this dude can't get poop in the back of the net. He works his ass off and I'll give that to him, but I'm still not the biggest fan.

He has a stigma from a few playoff meltdowns (I know, the past two playoffs he's looked great) and also that World Juniors he pretty much cost Canada the gold.

Yeah once he gets the puck the blinders come on and his only focus is throwing the puck on net regardless of where he his.....but gotta love his speed and energy
