Would have been interesting if Nylander didn't get a contract at all.
He'd still belong to the Leafs and the team probably wouldn't have suffered at all from it this year on the ice because he did next to nothing most of the year.
And, no 6.9 cap hit either.
Maybe the move really was to have him sit the whole year out. - JohnFergusonJr
You're thinking the best idea was to never sign him at all?
The 6.9M cap hit would be here next year, if he only sat out 1 year, no? |

Yup. He would be happy to settle for a lot less money. But then, they would have realized they didn't need him anyway and could shop him. |

Bill Ny is the best player on the ice for Sweden.
Would've been great if he played this way for the Leafs. - GreatGigInTheSky
big ice surface... and they are playing against Norway correct?
so ... level of physicality not very high
he probably skates better than anyone on the Norwegian team
and there's no pressure... if he plays like crap will anyone notice? not likely.
I hope for his sake he gets his confidence/mojo back.. but playing well against Norway ain't gonna do it

Depends. Bracco, Liljegren, Dermott, Rosen, Sandin, Moore, GOAT, Marin- oh dear god we’re doomed. - Steven_Seagull
I know we have a couple that can step right in at $1m and help/not hurt. Not sold on young D being able to do it, especially if all we have is Muzzin/Rielly and Dermott coming back after rehab and only really playing bottom pairing so far. |

Nah, I will continue to push the narrative because many many people and those in the hockey world also know this. Seagull said it's a false narrative guys, better shut up. No one knows exactly what they club was thinking, but we do know they gave him an enormous amount of money while he was a RFA and had zero leverage and was 21 years old. So ya, a cave. - aminnes
Please explain?
Nylander ask for $8M, Leafs sign him for $6.9M... How did the Leafs cave? |

And any other team can offer-sheet him, up to $4 million per year, and only surrender a 2nd round pick as compensation.
The Leafs are in a tough bind, cap-wise, this year. - Atomic Wedgie
And the defense still sucks with no space to improve it. |

Weird question:
Was Marner asked to play for Team Canada at this year's Worlds? - Atomic Wedgie
Not sure if anyone has answered this yet, but as far as I know players coming off of RFA's are not able to play since they're not on contracts. I could be wrong though, as it doesn't make much sense to me

No, I meant no contract at all.
He'd be an unsigned RFA.
He'd go play in Sweden or the KHL this past season and the Leafs would have retained his rights but he'd have no cap hit. |

That's why the Nylander negotiating was so crucial. But it was a cave in. Imagine if he had sat the whole year and your Matthews. You now know how far the club is prepared to go to keep their cap situation level. Instead you see the club cave in, paying 20 million in 12 months, and you realize you can fleece these guys. Absolutely zero chance Mitch gets anything less than his maximum UFA value just like those two did. Why would he take less? - aminnes
thats all made up
what if Matthews saw they Leafs wouldnt pay and and let Nylander sit out all years said (frank) it trade me. you cheap (frank)s
all this made up nonsense is so frustrating
just watch what Bob Mckenzie says about it and thats all that needs to be said

Yeah horrible decision to want a top 6 forward on your team when you want to compete.
(frank) having good players. Send them all to Europe when they want to be paid. We don’t need to win a cup we just need good cap hits. |

How did the club "cave" exactly?
Don't you recall all of those reports saying Nylander was looking for $8M+ per season?
We got him at $6.9, which is almost the same that Pastrnak got. Which was considered a comparable contract at that time. - PatC80
Comparable to who? No one thought he was anywhere near as good as Pasta except Leafs fans. He could have wanted 12 million a year. What he wanted has nothing to do with it, it's what was he worth. With how bad this has turned out I'm amazed people still stand by Dubas. Awful contract. |

There’s gonna be some trades. One of Johnsson/Kapanen and Kadri/Nylander will be moved for defence. SS4 |

Bob Mac? lol The same guy defending the league's god awful suspensions and officiating. He's a league apologist, I gives two poops what he says. They were restricted you guys. These were not UFA's yet the club reacted like they were. |
