I have traveled to nearly every state east of the mississippi river for work (steel mill industry), including illinios, arkansas and texas. Alabama was easily the most enjoyable. Nicest people, decent food, easy to drive, felt safe every where I went. Just all around great.

Just guessing, but practice time has been an issue with Covid in recent seasons. They may not have felt it was worth the limited time.

Blacks BBQ in Austin was incredible. I really wanted to go to Franklin's but I was only there for work and definitely didn't have an extra 6 hours to stand in line haha
