Agreed.
But neither has Matthews.

Its really only been willie.

- Fakepartofme

Matthews has been inconsistent. I feel like he was bringing it this year and I have to give him a pass due to injury even though it's been too long with the same results. It's just the truth this year.

Weird that Matthews is a finalist for the MVP award voted on by players but not the one voted on by writers
- Canada Cup

Weird. I like to think the writer's suck at voting these things.

Yeah, the guy got sick at the worst possible time, then got injured while trying to play despite being sick.

Really sucks for him, he deserved a better end to his amazing season. At the very least deserved the chance to play at 100%.

But life ain't fair, especially for the Leafs.

Sorry. I forgot, You're the only one allowed to use that cop out.
- Aaron_85

I didnt use one.
Dubas had final say, errors were made.
But they get made by all gms.

He was great one game honestly.
Yes i know he was ill, but even game 7, he was just decent.
But ya marner didnt show up all.
No one showed up game 1 or 4

Agreed. And he has to be someone who can quarterback a powerplay. I would love to steal Montour from Florida, tbh.
- fifty__missions

Montour seems the type but I worry about him - he's been super-inconsistent and just had the one really great year. I'm not sure what we'd get and he's on the wrong side of 30 now.

Skjei in Carolina might be an option too. But if MM is getting moved I'd hope it brings back a young dman with that kind of upside.

True it would have been nice to see how much he did or didn't contribute this year if he was both healthy and not hurt in these playoffs.

I mean looking at this entire thing now that round 2 has started.

Leafs were the underdogs going into the series with Boston and that was under these assumptions:

1. Auston Matthews was not injured nor sick at all.
2. William Nylander was not injured or sick and would not miss any games
3 Since he was playing before the season ended Marner was healed enough to contribute close to the level he shows most regular seasons.

And they were still the underdogs.

Now all those things didn't occur as we know and the Leafs pushed the Bruins to game 7 OT.

IF we were not so traumatized by game 7's. Bruins in the playoffs etc. AND the Leafs had more post season success with this core than we've seen many of us may be saying "proud they battled so hard with such adversity and were just a good bounce away from probably beating Boston".

Not showing up for a couple games sure didn't help, how did they suddenly decide come game 5 they were going to play a real playoff style of hockey? Why can't they do that for an entire series, hell playoff run?

Imagine if the game 5,6 and 7 Leafs had started the series playing that way? I would bet the Leafs would have won that series in 6 or maybe less but it is what it is.

I have held off on posting since the day of game 7, mostly because I didn't want to post from a position of emotion at so much of the derp that was being posting (also a lot of it probably from the raw emotion of the Leafs being bounced).

I do wonder (and we will probably never really know) what the big move Dubas wanted to make was (if that is true - because who really even knows that) BUT if it was the case I definately see Dubas as the guy who would tie his wagon to Marner over Willy after the Willy last contract fiasco that Dubas probably feels made him look bad.

So maybe we are lucky in that Willy didn't get moved - he sure seems like he is the guy with almost no drop off come playoffs vs Marner who well.....you know.

- Cush29

I cut out all emotion with this team years ago lol.

I feel like the deal would have been willie for karlsson....which i and i feel like most would have hated.

But yes based on playoff performance, which ive said many times on here is all i care about....Marner didnt perform this year (he did last season in the first round).
So with that, move him, walk him or dont sign him to anything above what willie signed for.

I feel like Marner could earn some points with fans if he signs a 8 x 10m contract extension, but he wont do that.
So bye bye

Watching these other series ...I think the biggest difference I see for creating offense is the ability of their d'men to move the puck (skate or pass), to join the rush and then to contribute in the ozone (good shots, cycle, etc..). Our blueline does not do that enough. Some of that could be coaching/style of play but some of that is definitely personel.

We need to find a way to get Rielly back to being a 10+ goal man and we need to find a way to add another top level 2-way guy.

- The Law

This 100%... Rielly looked injured to me (looked like he couldn't skate) but the Leafs need some big puck moving D that are actually good at D as well.

Also how many outlet passes did the Leafs make that went for icings.. I would love to see hat stat compared to other teams

I don't agree. If he stays at all, it will be as a 3rd line winger. His days of being able to handle duties up the middle are almost, if not already, at an end. He just does not have the footspeed, and it's only going to get worse.
- fifty__missions

move him to the wing

I would have hated that deal so hard! lol

Your right no shot Marner signs 8 x 10M no shot daddy let's him take a pay cut and he will want another raise to the point where he is yet again overpaid. Not sure if Tre will take the path of truth bombs with him when they chat about the future but he should.

I honestly can't even support a raise at all knowing how much Marner has been overpaid on his last deal in comparison to other right wingers in the league.

Hard for me to look at this list of Right Wingers and salaries and feel Marner's contract is aligned with what he has brought to the table WHEN IT MATTERS:

No to Liljegren. I'd rather have Boosh as the 3RD than the timid Timothy. Edmunston is still an option too.

The Hart is irrelevant compared to the Ted Lindsay. Who cares who the media thinks is the MVP "to their team". Not the best player in the league, or who had the best season. Let the Players decide. Ted Lindsay is the trophy that matters.
