If Tampa is swept, or when they lose, they will need to re-shape the roster. They need cap relief. Wonder if there is a hockey trade in there somewhere.

Its not like the Flyers have cap space to add anyone at the moment

That can be a blessing like when Johnny Gaudreau was available. While it was embarrassing that the Flyers couldn't afford to be in the running for someone who wanted to play for the Flyers, signing him would've been one of Fletchers many bad decisions.
I tend to see it as a good thing that the Flyers can't afford to make a splash this year in FA, even if it is because Briere now capped them out.

I don't think Briere did anything crazy with contracts either. They just have a few contracts they need to let play out. He also needs to be wary of the longterm deal with players that are just good. Looking at you TK

Do not put it past this team to buy players out to create cap space though
They will absolutely be doing everything they can including buying out Atkinson. - StepfordSam
I don't think the Flyers will have many options. The Flyers cannot trade Atkinson, not after the injury and the season he just had. No team is going to take him even if the Flyers covered the max 50% of his final year. The Flyers can send him down and bury him in the minors, but that would be a very poor reflection on the team and the team would only save about $1M in cap space. The Flyers really cannot expect Atkinson to play on their team next season, not after all the scratches and subpar play this year. Thus the only option is to buy him out and save $3.5M this year in cap space, while allowing Atkinson to maybe find a role on a team at the veteran minimum. I don't blame the Flyers for this, nor do I blame the player. This is just an unfortunate end for a good player that got significantly injured.
