I doubt it, there is a good chance Eric re-signs with the Canes during FA.

WOW !! Two 2nd's and a prospect hopefully blossums into something positive for the Canes'. I think it had to be done and RF got the most he could. You can only wonder what the other deals offered ??

No roster player though. For a team that's young and is close to playoff contention, need young help now. Not 3 years from now help.

I'd imagine the Canes will look into bringing Eric Staal back this off season though.

Agreed, I think Eric is back in Carolina come July 1st. I think he's going to need to take a salary cut though, I don't see him worth the 8.25 a year, maybe 5 per for 2 and see if his play improves? what do you Cane's fans expect?

I get the sense that this is a move away from the past. It's certainly possible but Ron Francis wants to put his own team together building through the draft and making moves when they can improve the club.

Obviously there's a hole in the top six now, but there's plenty of salary cap room to do something else.

Hey guys, I'm sure you'll say nothing but good things a bout Eric's play & work ethic. I see he has struggled this season but I'm hoping (along w Rangers brass) a reunion w little brother Marc & being back in the playoffs this Spring will put some pep in his step. Whether he re-signs this summer or not is a coin flip at this point.

Staal only would approve trade to NY right? That would damper the Canes ability to get better value.

Listening to GMRF's post game comments makes it sound like Eric may not be back. Eric's "fair" contract parameters didn't fit in our plans.

No point in a "budget" team overpaying a nostalgic player on the downside of his career who won't be a factor when the team is back on the upswing

That's what everyone says every yr since 2012 playoffs & 3/4 yrs we're either at least in the ECF or Cup Finals. Henrik steps it up when it matters most & now w some more offense to support I'm confidant they can go deep again.

And yes the big bad Caps are standing in everyones way but That team has still yet to get past Round 2 in the Ovechkin era. I wont hold my breath for this to suddenly be they're year. And also, the Rangers have beaten the Caps in the playoffs 3 out of last 4 yrs.

Right, because a team from New York is just destined to keep beating the same team over and over again for all eternity. Just ask the 2004 Red Sox.

Who the (frank) are the red socks? Is that like football or something? What does that have to do with Hockey? And 04? George Bush was still president and the Devils were still a good hockey team. I think I was in elementary school still. How about we stick with talking hockey and modern day things. What a ya think?

1st - seems we have an a-hole Boston fan talking about loser Red Sucks, get lost.
Boston - must obnoxious fans on earth (and annoying).
Get lost with your boring baseball.
2nd - great move by Canes, if Staal prevented the Canes from making a better deal, he can fall hard in NY.
He made so much more money that he was worth, another pathetic Rutherford contract.
Don't ever want to hear he needed better players around him, he was making $9M a year, it's his job to make players around him better.
Semin came in and made Staal a hero that 1/2 season.
Staal is abs has never been a playmaker (always falling or losing puck).
W do not need to sign him in off season.
Jordan hustles and plays hard every game, something Eric rarely did during his time in beautiful/Rockin Raleigh.
Go Canes (young team and climbing)!!!!

Staal has not been on a playoff team since 2009, so he really besides also playing w his brother be extra motivated to help the Rangers make a run.

That was 1 of several points I was making, but pick & choose what you want to argue about, IDC. BTW are the Devil fans still celebrating like they won the Cup cause they took 3 out of 4 from the Rangers in the season series? Whooptie doo, too bad other teams count for 2 points as well & Devils can't beat anyone lately. Kudos for taking the 3 of 4 from us but it happens, some teams have other teams numbers...um, kind of like the Rangers handling the Caps in the playoffs.

If, if ..... Staal blocked RF from making a better trade because he wanted to play in New York only, then I guess he has that right , given the contract JR bestowed upon him years ago. However, if this is true, then it does put a bad taste in Caniacs mouths regarding Staal. We'll probably never know the true story, but I think Ron Francis was trying to be as clear as he could that Eric won't be coming back this summer. I almost detected a slight bit of relief on RF's face and demeanor. Perhaps, I am reading too much into it. However, overall, I am happy with the return for Eric. I talked with some Rangers fans yesterday and they were just about all unanimously sad to see this trade cost them Aleksi Saarela. One fan told me that he is another Teemu Selanne. That may be a stretch, but he is an incredibly fast skater and an excellent playmaker.

Team gutted for rest of the season, and may have lost JM Liles to BOS now. Would have liked to see a couple a roster'd players come back, but no dice it seems. Not sure how the STH's will feel about this. Disappointed here, but realize its all about the future now.
