I expect they should be competing for a playoff spot. Just by eliminating four or five AHL players and adding in solid rookies and or true NHL players they should be able to move up a few spots into playoff contention area. - paulr
Whoa, pump the brakes! These "solid rookies" are still boys far from men. |

That's about the gist of it. My guess is Steve was the guy when they were winning Cups, was upset because they didn't sweep every round and weren't winning the games 10-0. - HawkintheD
Not true. Loved every minute and consider the run from the loss to Detroit in Conference Finals till the loss to Nashville the greatest hockey run I have seen and I am old enough to remember having to drive to my Aunt and Uncle's house in HP to watch Islanders/Oiler dynasties because they had cable and Glencoe did not.

I'd say a Podkolzin-type of deal for Reichel - 2 years @ $1 million AAV. - DarthKane
Perlini deal 1x$900k. |

Yes Vlasic will be 27 with $10 million in the bank with complete control of where he wants to sign. - stevefrmglencoe
And if he WANTS to sign in Chicago? He's said he wants to play for the Hawks as long has he possibly can. If that is more important to him than the money, then he'll take a discount. They have five other notable D-man prospects/first year players currently in the system and crap tons of draft picks behind them.
Right now the Hawks have a good player locked up for 6 years that has worked quite well with the only other D-man who is locked up that long.
You are making a ton of assumptions about what he wants or might possibly command, seemingly without even considering what he has said or what is known.

Vlasic has proven this year he can play top 2-4 mins (wondering if that makes him a middle 2-3 dman 😉) and be a stay at home shut down dman. He's also shown he can skate and may have more offense in his game.
You can absolutely compare them. Maybe if the Oilers had locked up Bouchard if he was willing to a deal similar to Vlasic's, they wouldn't be staring at a Jones like deal on his contract in a year.
Doesn't seem like very good asset management now does it? - HawkintheD
Oilers got 2 years to confirm that he is worthy. Now he has earned it and deserves it. Wish the Hawks had someone who could shoot it like him. Jones can't shoot. Not sure Vlasic will be PP QB ever. KK really moves well but I haven't noticed his shot from the point. Lots of guys in the system with lots of potential we will see if anyone can carry Bouchard's stick bag.

I don't get the term. If the rebuild works, he's going to be a UFA right when they are going to have Cap issues. - stevefrmglencoe
Really? Why don't you let us all in on the winning lottery numbers then Carnak.

Nobody will want to play in Chicago after the Beech incident.

If they are good, they will have cap issues regardless. From what we've seen and what KD has said, he wants to build sustainable success. That includes having a constant flow of new players. If Vlasic prices himself out of the team, they will/should have more coming behind him. |

Thanks for the back and forth. You have made my morning. You are right about me making assumptions. I certainly have to bite my tongue at home and in business. I am going to make a few more. In 5 years, Illinois state taxes are going to be the highest in the country. Probably more than NY. Vlasic's parents, will be living in Naples, FL where all rich retired Wilmette people move. If he pans out like we all dream, he is going to be offered contracts from teams in warm weather states with no-income tax.

Wrong, look west young man to California.
And there are no Ohtani type contracts allowed in the NHL anymore. |

Not sure you need to be Nostradamus to make those calls. I'm not from Wilmette, but I'm probably going to follow him out of town (though not to Florida - I'm hoping to figure out a move to Italy).
The fun thing about this young team is that there will be so many moving parts to consider in the next 4-5 years. New kids coming in, FA pieces, trades, etc. Who knows what the winning combo ends up. I just don't think we can make any bold statements about anything (or any player) with this team for a couple seasons. |

The only thing I think that helps CA on taxes are the property taxes. They are locked in at like 1.03% or something.

Great question. With either one, a 6 year deal would have been a mistake. With the generational guys like McDavid, Matthews, Crosby, Ovi and hopefully Bedard, the GM's future is so linked that the GM's are at the players mercy and typically write the next highest contract and hope the superstar is happy. Draisaitl probably wishes he waited to sign because he has left $20+ million on the table by dramatically outperforming his contract. Great call by the GM to lock him up at his number. I also believe that forwards, and in particular power forwards, with the exception of Iginla, Shanahan, Pavelski and a few, peak in their 20s and their point dramatically decrease in their 30s whereas the D are still incredibly effective later. - stevefrmglencoe
So do you let Draisaitl and McDavid walk when their contracts are up or do you resign them and pay them for 8 years when they turn 37 years old the contract expires.
One Vlasic grew up in the Chicagoland area, 2 when this team starts winning he's not going to want to leave, 3 they paid him a bunch of money up front so he doesn't have to worry about his next contract. That contract coincides with Seth jones contract expires, oh and if he can stay healthy if they sign him to an 8 year deal his contract would expire around 36, now that's perfect for a defenseman. |

True but then add in the bond issues that are paid with property taxes and depending where you are located it ends up more. BUT the real kicker is California taxes capital gains as ordinary income, which is generally 10% and above depending on income.

Hawk fans should only be happy if KD has cap issues when Vlasic's next contract is due, that generally means you have good players you want to keep.

Kaiser is due for new paper after next season and KK, DelMastro and Allan the year after. If we assume they are still with the organization by that time and progress and a couple work themselves into top 4D positions, have to wonder if Vlasic's contract will be a comparable to what they'll be getting.
The blue line will be awfully crowded in 2-3 years with the above, Vlasic, Jones, Rinzel a short ways away, and possibly this year's highly drafted prospect. |

Yeah, the rate sounds low, but your home value is so high it doesn't matter. A dump barely livable in the bay area (Mill Valley) was a million plus when we lived there. Our property taxes were almost $24K a year. So no, it doesn't help. |
