JT did not run the NYI so blaming him for the team missing the playoffs is just stupid - same for the age part. That would be like blaming McDavid for Oil mis-management of that team.

Marner has a few more points in a few less games - and that is it. Both players have made it to the second round ONCE with their original team.

Don't recall seeing JT panic when under pressure and flip the puck over the glass for D-zone penalties. But I've seen marner do that multiple times.

Marner can't adjust to the more physical nature of the playoffs.
JT's problem is that he is past his best-before date.

Was it smart for Leafs to bring in JT and let him suck up 11M in cap space? IMO no. But at same time it wasn't smart to give Marner over 10M right after his ELC.

Neither player is going to lead the Leafs to the promised land.

Marner has more playoff GWG (the same amount as Nylander: 3) since Tavares has been a Leaf. Tavares has 1.

As far as playoff success goes, the only thing we are left with are, ifs.

Sammy let in that tie goal, just left the side wide open. Woll didnt do that.
was no room for error and Sammy tends to leave room for that. even if he was really good otherwise.

anyways...no point dissecting it further.
stupid leafs suck

- senstroll

I think we would have won with Woll in. Probably 2-0 after an empty net goal.

But who the heck knows.

he will sign again with the leafs.

run it back

- senstroll

As much as I hate that idea, I would love to see this core with a different coach. I'd love to see the response from certain players if they get benched for half a period after a lazy backcheck, or an egregious giveaway. Take guys off PP1 if they aren't producing, etc. Next year we could have that opportunity to see.

But if I ran the show, Keefe is 100% fired and see what you can get for Mitch. Load up the back end.

Marner will come in between 11.5 (Willy) and 13.2 (AM)

My guess is 12.75

- senstroll

I think I read that the magic number (ie. if he demands the same as Willie but inflated to 25') is 12.15M ....anything over that he'd be demanding more than Willie.

you have a lotta answers... even to questions no one has asked. Opinions - that's cool.

purely out of curiousity - what's your take on why the powerplay completely poop the bed? Does Marner get a complete clean bill of health on that one as well?

- BorjeFan4Ever

Nylander missed the first 3 games did he not?

Matthews missed almost 2.5 games did he not?

Guy Boucher and Keefe are idiot coaches who can't change the PP and two of their best weapons were not playing for almost half the series.

Marner is an elite playmaker. If the shooters on the PP are not there, it's a lot harder to score goals against a team as defensively solid as the Bruins.

Where was Tavares on the PP? Where was Bertuzzi? Where were all the other players who were supposed to help score goals?

Matthews had 1 goal. Tavares had 1 goal. Marner had 1 goal. And yet Marner is the one who the simpletons have attacked relentlessly.

This is not to say Marner doesn't deserve a portion of the blame but not a disproportionate amount. He deserves an equal amount as the other guys because this isn't tennis. It's a team sport and they have to work together as a team, both when things go well and when they go bad.

Tavares was winning 56% of his draws and played well defensively. Marner did neither of those things.

I thought they played playoff hockey for the first time, just terrible luck on the injury front.
- shack67

No doubt, the team played some good hockey aside from the first period of game 1 and that $hitshow game 4. A LOT of players stepped up in ways we haven't seen before. Notably, one player took a big step backwards.

Next year is going to be pretty painful. Willy's contract kicks in, JT is still on the books, and I'm very skeptical of them being able to move MM. Going to be a lot of holes to fill with minimal cap space.
- Whipper

We had this convo whipper! Leafs have more room then they've had in years ...they have about $17.5M to spend and this foundation to play with

Knies-Matthews-Marner
McMann-JT-Nylander
Robertson-Holmberg-Jarnkrok
Dewar-Kampf-Reaves
Rielly
McCabe
Benoit-Timmins
Woll

A veteran goalie ....and a 6/7 dman are both cheap. Maybe they bring back Domi. But I think they could spend about 10-12M on a pair of d'men if they like the options.

Jeez, Wikipedia has him as 6'1", 238lbs. I was like holy f@ck, he looks a lot smaller than that!

He's 5'11", 185lbs I fear he'll be undersized, hopefully he's still growing.

complete nonsense... just like anything coming from the Toronto media related to Marner - they were the useful idiots that Marner's family leveraged to squeeze more money in the last contract. Dreger in particular was driving to get Marner what Matthews got.

got to stop thinking about the trade of Marner as a pure trade - but also include the benefit of having additional CAP flexibility - not having 10.5 tied up in yet another forward. Beyond that - it isn't 10.6.. because in all likelihood Marner wants more than Nylander at a minimum... a giving him a raise would be bonkers. But with that said - if he does stay it will be at 11M minimum.

I believe the focus needs to be on those teams where making a splash - which acquiring a consistent 90point + player would be - obviously Arizona/SLC, Seattle, Winnipeg, Nashville, Columbus (new manager) would be top of mind
