This has not been a "big splash" year for free agent signings. BUT there have some sneaky good signings by some clubs. The two Florida-based teams in particular have done a fine job.
With Tampa Bay, I thought signing Cam Atkinson at a bargain cost after Philly bought him out was a very good decision. I don't think Cam is finished as an effective NHL player, and he's a GREAT player in the room. He brings a level of enthusiasm and positive energy... and he backs it up... that every team needs.
I also LOVED the Moser extension. KJ has become a stalwart of sorts and I would have guessed he would have gone for more than this AAV. It's a 2 years deal, at $3.375M per. At this point ANY top 4 d-man under 4M is kind of a steal.
With Florida, where Zito's skill at finding under the radar players and smart reclamation projects with a strong chance of success is a HUGE reason with the Panthers are defending Stanley Cup champs and back-to-back Eastern Conference champs, I think signing Adam Boqvist was a brilliant move. Buy low on talents of this caliber, surround them with high quality teammates and good coaching, and reap the benefits.
