RFA Offersheet Boom Could Turn Bust Really Fast. Here’s Why… |

there are a lot of articles being written right now, prescribing how many teams are gonna be looking at RFA’s with offer sheets and trying to steal them away… I’ve even written articles about this. The Holloway and Broberg offer sheets or something that other teams would love to get involved with. Players you can offer sheet for under 4.5 million, don’t require a first round draft pick…
However, it’s hard to imagine teams making the mistake of not matching after what’s happening in Edmonton. You truly have to give up on a player to not match at that rate…. Edmonton thought they could replace those guys with cheaper guys and they turned out to be very wrong. Very wrong to the point that their chances in this season’s playoffs are severely diminished because they can’t get depth scoring or depth defense.
GMs are known for two things that they will almost always do. One, they learn from other GM’s mistakes and two, it’s a copycat league.
We all remember when Vegas came into the league and GMS made some mistakes by offering compensation to Vegas, on the promise they would not choose other players….. that set up Vegas for very early success for sure…That and Marc-Andre Fleury.
So when Seattle came into the league, Gms had learned a lot from Vegas and didn’t make the same mistakes to benefit Seattle…..and the Kraken didn’t have the same kind of success Vegas had early…
Well, in many ways, you can look at the Holloway/Broberg as a similar cautionary tale to GM’s. I do think the offer sheet boom could take place one level up where you only have to give away one first round draft pick and 1 third for a contract of 4.6 to 6.8M…
A good team giving up a first rounder isn’t as hard as a bad team giving up the same. Big difference when you draft in the top half of the first and the bottom half…
Finally, something I just found out from talking to a GM. Making offer sheets aren’t cheap. It can cost about 100,000 in legal fees to actually make the offer sheet, and if the team matches, you don’t get any of that back….
So I’m not sure about what to expect here. Whether it will be boom or bust. Also, the economy situation is really tenuous and could play a role in how high the cap goes up….. It might lead to uncertainty of making big offers….. and that’s a really big factor because owners of teams have a lot of money in the stock market…
What say you?
