I was sitting in the Hartford airport the other day waiting for my flight when a gentleman came and sat three seats from me. He was talking on his phone all you heard was "He can't help the team, what are we going to do with him? He sucks...I know, I know but what can we do?" He finished his call and sat back in his seat almost frustrated. I went and got a coffee and when I returned I thought I'd throw out the hockey line. I started with..
PJ- Are you involved with hockey?
stranger- Yes
PJ-(thinking a local minor team) What Team?
stranger- the Tampa Bay Lightning
PJ- (thinking he's got to be a scout) What do you do with them?
stranger-I'm the GM
so that's when we started chatting. I was sitting beside Mr Jay Feaster, the general manager of the Lightning. We started discussing everything from life in Tampa to hockey in the minors to goal tending and of course TRADE DEADLINE DAY. He was telling how difficult it was to make any moves. The reason there wasn't many big names moved is that everybody wanted to give up duds in return for studs. Also the new mentality of the NHL is to trade your former players to the other conference. In general he said that it was such a tough day that no one would give an inch and in the end he's hoping he made all the right moves. A classy guy who spoke very well without throwing anyone under the bus. He should have though, his team is headed in the wrong direction in a hurry. The Stanley Cup champs are sitting in 8th in the conference and Atlanta is hot on their heels.
