UPDATE: Dany Heatley has not yet agreed to waive his no-trade clause.
Smid, Penner and Cogliano for malcontent goal scorer, Dany Heatley. A ransom for a player who, let's be frank, has left a negative mark on two franchises - and possibly three, even if he doesn't end up wearing the copper and blue silks!
Smid, Penner and a draft pick, first or second, should get this deal done. Throwing a player busting with talent like Andrew Cogliano into the mix is completely over the top. That is, if Heatley waives his no-trade clause.
Since the draft, a well-placed source of mine has maintained that Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has been working hard to attract a pair of major offensive players. It's no secret Heatley is one of them. That said, if by moving the speedy Cogliano, who seemingly would be united with Spezza in Ottawa, Tambo is clearing up cap space to land another offensive piece to the team's retool, then we'll just have to reserve judgement until the dust settles.
If, however, Heatley agrees to head west thus costing Edmonton Cogliano, Smidder, Penz and a $4M bonus as of midnight, then, on paper, Murray wins this trade and his team has taken a huge step back towards respectabiility.
Stay tuned Oilers faithful!
