The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Thursday the replacement for the departed Wes Clark, as the club has hired Mark Leach as their new Director of Amateur Scouting.

The 62-year-old Leach has been an amateur scout for 30 years. He joined the Detroit Red Wings organization in 1994 and was part of the scouting staff that assembled the Stanley Cup-winning Detroit squads in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

When Jim Nill moved from the Wings to Dallas as general manager in 2013, Leach joined him in Texas under Stars Director of Amateur Scouting Joe McDonnell. In 11 seasons, Dallas has had a remarkable record of drafting impact players with picks outside the top of the first round, like Roope Hintz (49th overall – 2015), Jake Oettinger (26th overall – 2017), Jason Robertson (39th overall – 2017), Thomas Harley (18th overall – 2019), Mavrik Bourque (30th overall – 2020), Wyatt Johnston (23rd overall – 2021), and Logan Stankoven (47th overall – 2021),

Leach has an excellent reputation throughout the league for his eye for talent, but with the Leafs having only seven picks over the next two drafts, the club may have to turn to alternative ways to add talent, such as signing undrafted college free agents as they did with NCAA product Jacob Quillan.
