The Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Detroit Red Wings in overtime. With this win the Coyotes set a franchise record for reaching the 30 win mark in 53 games. The Coyotes are in fifth place in the West and moved to 6 points ahead of the Red Wings and remain 2 points ahead of LA. With the road win, the Coyotes split the season series with Detroit, with each team winning a home and road game.
The Red Wings took a 2 goal lead at the 15:22 mark on a goal by Nicklas Lidstrom, only to lose that lead for the 4th straight game with goals by Keith Yandle and Ed Jovanovski, sending the game to overtime. After a couple of Detroit chances early in the overtime, Captain Coyote Shane Doan scored the game winner with just 1:50 left in the overtime.
The Coyotes never say die attitude was on display in this game, as Detroit seemingly had the game in hand and really controlled most of the game. The “Pack” mentality also was on display with 8 different players collecting points in this game. Keith Yandle played one of his best games of the season.
With the win Dave Tippett moved one game closer to Mike Babcock for most wins as a coach since the 2002-2003 season. Ilya Bryzgalov also set his single season wins mark with his 27th victory.
The Coyotes return home to play the Calgary Flames Thursday night at Jobing.com arena.
