The Bruins, when on their game, are a good team.

The Jets, when on their game, are a great team.

And on Tuesday night, with the Bruins not on their game and the Jets on theirs, things got ugly and in a hurry for the Bruins to the tune of an 8-1 blowout loss. For the Bruins, it was their worst loss of the season, ‘beating’ an 8-2 loss to the Hurricanes on Halloween, and for Jeremy Swayman it was the worst night of his career, with a career-worst eight goals allowed.

In goal for all eight goals, Swayman became just the first Bruins goalie to surrender eight goals in a single game since Daniel Vladar ‘accomplished’ that in a beatdown at the hands of the Capitals in Apr. 2021. Overall, it was just the fifth time since 2003 that a Bruins netminder had surrendered eight goals in an outing, and just the third time it’s happened to the Black and Gold in the post-lockout NHL.

With the loss, which came with a return to some bad habits from the Bruins when it came to their puck management and penalty-killing pressure, the Bruins saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

And if there’s a single positive you can pull from this game, it’s that David Pastrnak got back on the board with a power-play goal.

For Pastrnak, it was just his fourth power-play goal of the season, and his first since Oct. 26. To say he was due would be putting it lightly. And for Pastrnak, the positive comes with the fact that this goal is right in his wheelhouse. That one-time bomb has to be a go-to for him and the Boston power play (it’s their best weapon on the man advantage, especially with the bumper seemingly used less than it was a year ago), and Pastrnak needs to have the confidence to get that shot off. That has not been the case in 2024-25.

Bruins lose Regula to waivers

In a bit of a surprising twist, the Bruins were not able to sneak defenseman Alec Regula down to the minors via the waiver wire, with Regula claimed by the Oilers on Wednesday.

Edmonton’s claim on Regula comes after the Bruins attempted to send Regula down to Providence after he missed the first two months of the season as he recovered from offseason knee surgery. In essence, with Regula ready to start practicing again, the Bruins had to place him on waivers to assign him back down to Providence, where he spent the entirety of the 2023-24 season in the B’s organization.

A 6-foot-4 defender, Regula was originally acquired by the Bruins in the 2023 trade that dumped Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno on the Blackhawks in the name of cap space for the up-against-it Bruins. The right-shooting Regula put up four goals and 26 points, along with a plus-36 rating, in 55 games for the P-Bruins a year ago, and that plus-36 was the best in the entire AHL last season.

If Regula does not fit with the Oilers for whatever reason, he will have to hit the waiver wire again, where Don Sweeney and the Bruins would have the opportunity to reclaim him and assign him to AHL Providence so long as no other team put a claim in on him.

But with Regula out of the Bruins’ plans for the time being, Boston’s right-side defensive depth below the NHL level features Ian Mitchell, Billy Sweezey, Ryan Mast, and Drew Bavaro.
