Taken off the board at 17th Overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, where he was expected to go much lower, Hishon has come back in a big way this season in an attempt to silence his critics. Not a stranger to the limelight, Hishon was a highley touted prospect prior to his draft, having been selected 8th Overall in the OHL Priority Draft of 2007.
The Stratford native was selected out of his local AA team, and put right into the fire in his rookie season.
The hope with Hishon, lied in the fact that he had shown flashes of his superb offensive talent throughout his major junior career with point totals of 47, 81, 40 and finishing out this season with 87, good for 15th in OHL Scoring.
Hishon is still a little on the undersized end of things, at 5'10, 175 lbs, but his high compete level and unparalleled work ethic should help him overcome any issues he faces going forward. The two-way center goes into the OHL playoffs this season on a top team in Owen Sound, hoping to lead them to success; something that could pay huge dividends for the forward going forward.
Joey is a good friend of current Avalanche center, Matt Duchene, and the two of them project to be a large part of the Avs core for years to come.
"Two of my good friends, Matt Duchene, and Ryan O'Reilly, play there already," he told the countless masses of the hockey media on draft day. "I know they're a young team, building for the future.
"It's an unbelievable town with unbelievable fans."
Hishon recently signed his entry-level contract with Colorado, this past Monday, and could potentially compete for a spot on the big club, come September. After four years of OHL experience, the young pivot has AHL eligibility and will likely spend his time from this summer on within the Colorado system.
A big game player who wants to make a difference, Hishon is always looking for the puck when the game is on the line. Hishon has all the tools that scouts envy in a prospect, outside of his lack of optimal size. High end hockey sense, quick elusive skating, crafty hands and the ability to be an enigma offensively all work in his favor. While he shows playmakers instincts, he also shows the ability to be a finisher and has the east-west speed to make plays out of nothing.
Joey looks to continue his dominate play Friday, as the London Knights step into Owen Sound in hopes of derailing the Attack's season.
