Sergei Bobrovsky got the start in goal for Team Russia Saturday against the US and while he played well, stopping 31 of 33 shots through OT, TJ Oshie bested the Columbus netminder four times on six shootout attempts to earn the win for the Americans. Overall Bobrovsky allowed four goals on eight tries in the shootout.
Fedor Tyutin was involved in a controversial play in the third period when it appeared he gave Team Russia a lead with a little more than four minutes remaining in the final period. The goal was waved off after a review with the officials determining the cage was knocked off its moorings. The ruling did not sit well with the Russians as both head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov and Alex Ovechkin felt US goalie Jonathan Quick dislodged the net on purpose.
"I don't know what happened there, but definitely was a goal," Ovechkin said. "Nobody touched the net. Their goalie touched the net and put it out. But the referee has to see it and at least give him two minutes, you know?"
Tyutin also took a minor penalty for crosschecking, joining US forward David Backes in the box after the two battled in the defensive zone.
Artem Anisimov was held off the score sheet and had two shots on goal. Nikita Nikitin, who had an assist in Russia's 5 - 2 win over Slovenia in the tournament opener, failed to record a point.
Russia and the Columbus contingent wrap up round robin play against Slovakia tomorrow. The Slovakians have had a tough go of it through two games, dropping a 7 - 1 decision to the Americans before losing to Slovenia 3 - 1. It was the Slovenians first ever Winter Olympics win in Men's Ice Hockey.
