When the Penguins traded for Erik Karlsson I thought we would have more games that looked like last night. A flawed team who would be able to score some goals backed by their aging superstars. We know it hasn’t quite played out that way, last night it did.
And speaking of superstars it was Max Talbot bobblehead night and wouldn’t you know it, the Penguins found some fight while trailing 3-0 and clawed all the way back to a victory over the Flyers just like that fabled afternoon all those years ago.
Evgeni Malkin led the way with a vintage two goal four point performance with Erik Karlsson backing him up with his own two goal three point performance. Malkin’s two goals were the tying goal in the third and the game winner in overtime and each of them were a reminder of just how good he still is.
This was a classic snipe job. The overtime winner was just a great combination of patience and natural finishing ability
This was a nice moment in a lost season.
Moving on to another topic
So Rakell has been shooting the lights out this season and he is having a wonderful season. I think the chances are good this is going to be his apex run with the Penguins given his shooting percentage. If the shooting percentage slips so does the perception of the player. It is a seller’s market and I think the Penguins should sell high here. He will be entering his age 32 season next year with three years left on his deal. I do like Rakell as a player, but he doesn’t line up with the Penguins timeline. Dubas has committed to a rebuild and Rakell is the type of trade a rebuilding team makes.
Ryan Graves had his first point of the season last night in game 43. I thought he had gotten an assist a few games back, but they must have taken that one away. He however still trails Alex Nedeljkovic in goals. Only four more years left on his deal.
Matt Nieto was put on waivers and cleared. He is heading to WB/S. Emil Bemstrom will be getting the promotion and he has earned it. He has 46 points in 43 games this year in the AHL. Whether or not that translates to some NHL success, we’ll see, but those numbers are good and given where the season is why not throw a player like that a bone?
Up next an afternoon tilt against the Bruins on Saturday at 3
