Happy NHL Draft Day Hockey fans! (Colorado picks 27th and 31st… for now. 👀)
A day after Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche traded forward Alex Newhook to Montreal for picks 31 and 37 in this years draft, the Avs were back at it today.
Colorado acquired forward Ross Colton from the Tampa Bay Lightning with one of the picks (37) they received in the Newhook deal.
Colton is a solid depth add and a proven winner. A Stanley Cup champion, Colton had 32 points (16g, 16a) in 81 games with Tampa this past season. The 26-year-old has 83 points (47g, 36a) in 190 career games.
All this after adding center Ryan Johansen over the weekend for Alex Galchenyuk.
Another fine piece of work for Sakic and he works to bolster a roster that faltered just a season after winning the Stanley Cup. Injuries played a major roll in Colorado's demise, but if feels like Sakic is really focused on retooling the teams depth in the savviest ways possible.
Yesterday was wild. It's still early, but today already feels like it has the potential to trump that.
I will update if the Avs make any additional moves.
FYI, per Cap Friendly:
PROJECTED CAP HIT: $74,925,000
PROJECTED LTIR USED: $0
PROJECTED CAP SPACE: $8,575,000

Steve
