This week, the New York Islanders made a major trade, as well as a few minor signings. Here’s the weekly recap:

DEVON TOEWS TRADED TO AVALANCHE

Obviously, the notable move of the week came on Monday, when the Islanders dealt Devon Toews to the Colorado Avalanche for two second-round picks. This is a trade that came as a result of New York’s cap situation.

FOUR PLAYERS SIGNED

The Islanders made minor moves this past week in terms of signings, extending defensemen Grant Hutton, Mitch Vande Sompel and Parker Wotherspoon. They also signed forward Austin Czarnik.

ISLANDERS LOOKING TO RE-SIGN MATT MARTIN

As discussed in yesterday’s article, the Islanders are reportedly looking to bring back Matt Martin, according to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple. Martin is 31 years old and is coming off a four-year contract, which carried an AAV of $2.5 million.

ANDY GREENE LIKELY TO RETURN

According to Newsday’s Andrew Gross, Lou Lamoriello said there’s a “good chance” that New York could re-sign Greene. I think we have to wait and see what the deal looks like before giving a verdict on this move.

ISLANDERS LIKELY TO SIGN CORY SCHNEIDER

The New York Islanders are likely to sign goaltender Cory Schneider, who was bought out by the New Jersey Devils, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. Schneider is 34 years old and would be New York’s third goalie.

JOHNNY BOYCHUK COULD BE MOVED

According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Islanders are close to moving Johnny Boychuk. Personally, I’d imagine at least one of the picks acquired in the Toews trade would be moved with Boychuk.

As for this week’s polls, here are the results and my thoughts on how they turned out:

QUESTION: Thoughts on Devon Toews being traded for two second-round picks?

(Votes: 528)

Not happy with it: 46%
Depends what moves come next: 44%
Happy with it: 10%

I’m definitely with the group that isn’t happy about this. The Islanders gave up a relatively young, top-four defenseman with nobody ready to take over as a long-term replacement. I know the team didn’t have a lot of options but I fear this will look very bad in a year or two.

QUESTION: Do you expect that at least one of the picks acquired in the trade will be packaged with a bad contract to clear cap space?

(Votes: 422)

Yes: 86%
No: 14%

I’d be pretty surprised if this isn’t the case. The Islanders still need to clear a bad contract and they don’t have the prospects to do it, so it has to come from draft capital.

QUESTION: Should the Islanders bring back Matt Martin?

(Votes: 265)

Yes: 45%
No: 32%
Depends on the price: 23%

I’m going against the grain on this one and saying at best, I think it depends on the price. The Islanders need to get younger, have a replacement available in Ross Johnston, and they simply can’t continue to pour money into their bottom-six.
