The Carolina Hurricanes announced earlier today that they’ve signed forward Seth Jarvis to an eight-year contract, carrying a $7.5 million cap hit.

Originally selected 13th overall by the Hurricanes in 2020, Jarvis has spent the last three seasons as a regular member of the team's forward group. This past season marked somewhat of a breakout year for the winger, scoring 33 goals and 67 points in 81 games. At just 22 years old, the deal keeps Jarvis locked up for what should be the prime years of his career.

It remains to be seen as to what Jarvis’ long-term ceiling is production-wise. While this season marked a big step up offensively, the previous two seasons had seen him hover closer to around 15 goals and 40 points.

Still, while Jarvis may not have the same raw offensive talent as the likes of a winger like Martin Necas, he’s already developed into a very well-rounded player. He’s a great forechecker, brings a consistent work ethic, and is very sound defensively.

The contract itself is also fairly unique. As was explained more in-depth by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, Jarvis’ contract includes deferred salary. So while he’s making a total of $63.2 million on the deal (which would be the equivalent to a $7.9 million cap hit across eight years), a chunk of the money will be scheduled just after the deal expires, which in turn, won’t count against the salary cap for Carolina.

It’s a pretty interesting contract, and one that could end up having an impact on future deals signed around the NHL. I’ll aim to release a contract analysis article for the deal in the coming days at HockeyComparables.com.
