Qualifying offers expire, no need for panic, clubs still have rights

This was talked about in the comments a bit and it seemed worth some clarification. Unless the player or the club has filed for arbitration, the QOs (in terms of dollar amounts) are no longer binding in terms of the number. However, the club retains first rights of refusal should a player go and sign with another club. At that point it boils down to return vs. cost.

Of Detroit’s 4 RFAs that were qualified, only Veleno elected for arbitration. Berggren, Seider and Raymond are all likely in negotiations with the latter two being the clear priority. In recent memory only William Nylander/Toronto came down to the 11th hour. We saw Athanasiou come late to camp one year once he came down on his ask. It’s hard to imagine that Veleno or Berggren have a fairly high ticket in mind. Sprong as a UFA hasn’t yet wrangled his rumored 3x3+m ask. It would be tough to see either of JB or JV outdraw Sprong at this point. (Opinion). It’s Seider and Raymond that have made the process exhaustive. Both got to the pro level quickly and became contributors. Great, but it comes at a cost.

Interestingly, the link above doesn’t show that Utah filed for arbitration with Soderstrom. Though most disagree, this is still a deal I wouldn’t mind seeing. As for the logjam, very real issue that isn’t my problem. I’d still take the chance on the young Dman knowing that it could go either way. Just, again, opinion.

So where are you at with Detroit’s RFAs? What are your cutoff $s for JB and JV? There’s always a “walk away” number, where do you put them? Let me know, and thanks for stopping by!
