PHR opines Wings will be good in net…eventually

Detroit won’t have a prospect’s tournament this year. The team has, instead, agreed to a back to back prospect set September 14th and 15th in Traverse City. Fans won’t get a glimpse of Sandin-Pellikka, but many eyes will be on the goalies.

PHR writes that there will be “net gains” for Detroit as both Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine seem to be very promising prospects for the team. Augustine had a very good freshman year at MSU and stepped in for Alex Lyon in the worlds and is reflected in this quote:

When Red Wings teammate Alex Lyon went down with injury, Augustine then went one step further and actually played games – setting an impressive .929 save percentage in four games. The gravity of Augustine’s appearance at Worlds can’t be understated. Only a handful of U21 goalies have played multiple games at the event, placing Augustine among company like John Gibson, Arturs Silovs, Ilya Sorokin, Jesper Wallstedt, and Jacob Markstrom.

While the coming season has yet to inspire a lot of confidence in parts of the fan base, the pipeline has some potential gems in it. There seems to be some thought that Husso may have fallen out of favor a bit and that Lyon could be the presumptive starter this year. However it shakes out, Detroit has to cut down the goals against and replace goals lost in free agency.

I have a bit more optimism in how the team could work than some, but still have to wait and see what it looks like on the ice. Let me know your thoughts on the now and future occupants of the net for Detroit.
