The Red Wings may have played their best first period of the season. Unfortunately, that didn’t carry over and an ill-timed penalty by Copp ultimately gave the overtime advantage to Edmonton. Though Copp’s penalty had expired, he wasn’t able to re-engage.

There’s not a question as to which is the better team, Detroit had strong goaltending after a first period that went very well for the Winged Wheel. It’s not hard to see the fires of coming one game away from winning a cup in the eyes of Edmonton when they turn up the heat.

Credit to the coaching staff for Detroit for making adjustments to the 2nd line that seemed to bode well. Copp and Compher both had goals for the team and the line seemed to mesh well with Kane. It’s a frustrating loss, but a better effort overall for the Wings.

Detroit has to get back into the win column quickly. These early stretches can come back to bite you late in the season as they will soon face an as of yet undefeated Winnipeg team. Draisaitl factored in on all 3 goals for Edmonton as the big German continues to show why he’ll soon be a well compensated piece of the Edmonton puzzle.

Talbot did a lot for the team, Edvinsson took on some heavy minutes and made some timely blocks. Seider continues to lead in the difficult areas and didn’t shy away from doing all he could against his countryman on the opposing bench.

Petry saw a little redemption for his unwilling assist in the loss yesterday but tonight it was Maata who helped lead to Detroit’s demise. Regardless, the blue line functioned better (opinion) with Johansson in and Gus sitting this one out. So far the proposed power play specialist has felt like a bit of a bust.

The Wings can catch their breath and will be back in action Wednesday against the Jets who could well be 9-0-0 heading into that contest. We’ll see what the mid-week tilt brings. As always, let me know your thoughts in what was a welcome point in a disappointing loss.

1st Period Detroit goals:

Line juggling paid off early as the 2nd line all factored in on the first goal. Copp kicked the puck to Kane from the corner boards, Kane was facing the boards by the net, banked the puck to Compher who was in the slot and scored the game’s first tally

2nd Period Detroit goals:

At 8:46 Edmonton tied it up as a Draisaitl shot went off of Maata. 1-1

42 seconds later Petry shot the puck from the blue line and Copp tipped it in. 2nd Assist by Kane to restore the one goal lead 2-1
