Between being groggy, a horrible 3rd and a not great week in the hockey writing world, what I was typing early in the morning was not, well, useable. Hopefully this will be a bit more of a step backward.

Detroit’s power play has certainly picked up steam. Kasper got his first goal, Raymond and Berggren got their 2nd and there were signs of life. Then, the defense. The mantra 2 years ago was to add goals. The team went out and did that. This year’s goal was to allow fewer goals. Massive swing and a miss in terms of building a better defensive structure. The defense looks lost and the Penalty kill is horrible.

At this point, if Detroit stays the course, it seems like they want to be a lottery team. Except for the power play now, very little seems to be the result of a well drilled and constructed scheme. There’s no clear “Left Wing Lock”, “1-3-1” or breakout formations. It’s more a matter of getting a lucky bounce to the neutral zone and hoping it doesn’t turn into an odd man rush in the other direction.

Let me know your thoughts on this. Is the coaching staff giving the team a structure to work with and it’s simply not being executed? Or is this just a series of set plays and scenarios thrown together with no real common thread? Regardless, last night should have been a win. It seems like the current coaching model is not doing anything for the defense (positional or team). They’ll have another kick at the can in L.A. tonight.

1st Period goals:

At Just 1:12 into the 1st the Ducks grabbed an early lead. 1-0

Power Play continues to click. At 7:59 Kasper got his first of the season and of his NHL career on the man advantage. Seider was at the blue line, found Compher near the faceoff dots and Kasper skated into the zone fresh off the bench. J.T. Got him the puck and a snap shot got Detroit on the board. 1-1

Another power play, another goal at 19:16 as Berggren got his 2nd of the season. The puck found Tarasenko on the left side who sent the puck all the way through the slot to a wide open JB, ironically scoring in the same place he scored his first NHL goal. 2-1 Detroit

Shots: 12-6 DET
Score: 2-1 DET

2nd Period goals:

Just 1:05 into the 2nd Detroit was in their own zone, Debrincat made a nice bounce pass off of the boards to Raymond who skated all the way down on buried his 2nd of the season. 3-1 DET

Ducks get one back on the power play at 17:44. 3-2 DET

Shots: 20-20
Score: 3-2 DET

3rd Period goals:

Detroit’s 3rd period start ended up with them letting in 3 goals in the first 11 minutes, getting down 5-3.

The team came back within one, again on the power play, as Debrincat ripped a shot in from the left but an empty net goal sealed the team’s fate.

Shots: 29-25 Anaheim
Score: 6-4 Anaheim
