Detroit is coming off of the final game in a season sweep of the Isles. Until the movie to Florida, Matthew Tkachuk was more than able to stir the pot and put Wings in the penalty box. The team is notably different, and here are the breakdowns for the two heading into tonight:
Power Play - Detroit 26.7%(6th). Calgary 19.4%(18th)
PK. - Detroit 68.4%(32nd). Calgary 75.4% (26th)
Faceoff. - Detroit 49.9%(17th). Calgary 44.6% (30th)
Goals for. - Detroit 2.52 (25th). Calgary 2.64. (23rd)
Against. - Detroit 3.10 (18th). Calgary 2.73 (9th)
The power play stat for Detroit feels a little cold right now as it has been shut down the past 3 games. The penalty kill at 32nd in the league looks about right. Both teams have a negative goal differential. It’s up to Detroit to stay out of the box. The PK has been awful. As you can see above, Husso is an emergency callup as Lyon “tweaked” something. Talbot gets the nod.
An interesting paralell between the teams has surfaced. Both are looking at the Blue Jackets for upgrades. Both may be looking at David Jiricek as several teams are rumored to be looking. Oddly, rumors of Nashville potentially being a seller could add some interesting names to the mix. That one is now what I thought we’d be seeing this year.
For the back and forth on LaLonde and rumors of any moves, believe it when you see it. To their credit, the front office lets very little slip in terms of rumors. We basically find out about negotiations after a deal has been made. As for tonight, Detroit has to find a way to get the power play going again. Raymond is coming alive and Berggren looks like he should be getting more minutes with Patrick Kane sidelined again.
Let me know your thoughts on tonight. Both of these teams are looking to upgrade. Two teams with a sense or urgency can make for an entertaining tilt, to be sure.
