Last Night’s shut out loss to St. Louis felt like a more poignant moment for the fan base. Some boos started coming down and along with some knit hats after a St. Louis Hat Trick, other debris was said to be hitting the ice. The fans are getting louder, but it looks like good things are still in the works in terms of the pipeline.
In 25 games played,Axel Sandin-Pellikka still leads his team in points with 22 (8g, 14a) in 25 games played. The 19 year old right shot Dman is in a 3 way tie for goals scored at 8 tied for the lead in assists with 14. He will also captain the Swedish team for the WJC-U20 tournament coming up.
Listed at 5’11”, the offensively minded Dman would be a welcome addition to the club if he does come over after his season ends. (For what it’s worth, Michael Brandsegg-Nygaard currently has 7 points in 18 games with 3 goals and 4 assists)
Sandin-Pellikka is, for myself, one of the more exciting names on the roster. It will be interesting to see his upcoming performance on the international stage. With Cossa continuing to develop, Augustine at MSU, Danielson, Lombardi and Dmitri Buchelnikov there are names that should encourage the fan base about what’s coming.
It would be a great boost to see young prospects grab a spot on the main roster before next season. In the meantime, coach Dan Watson has the team in Grand Rapids working. If you head over to the youtube channel, you’ll hear some of his philosophies that are relatively fresh and could pay dividends in the development of these picks. At the time of the video, the coach wasn’t doing off days. Every skate is meant to be hard and he wants to have a strong work ethic from the players. He also wants the team to celebrate call ups and support their teammates who get a chance to play for the main club. The other philosophy of coach Watson is to focus more on how his team is working and playing than on scouting the opposition.
It feels like good days are ahead. It’s a nice chance to step back and see what the future may hold. Sandin-Pellikka is bringing a lot to the table in Sweden, I look forward to seeing his development shift to this side of the pond.
