The power play goes 2 for 3 and the penalty kill shut down both of Winnipeg’s man advantages. Detroit now has a 4 game winning streak and continue to make simple, sensible plays. Lyon had to come up big against the Jets later in the game, but for the first time since 2022 Detroit was victorious in Winnipeg.
Raymond scored, Debrincat scored, and Larkin scored twice (one empty net tally). Since the empty net gift from linemate Raymond the Captain has been on a multi game streak. The team is almost unrecognizable. A big moment that may have passed by was the Detroit coaching staff contemplating challenging a goal for an offside play at the line. McLellan called a timeout and reviewed the angles (in the floor monitor) ultimately deciding against a challenge. Still, that “stop and regroup” moment seemed to help the team reset mentally and go back out ready to keep pushing.
For a 4th straight time players will see the Winged Wheel facing them on game night instead of their name and number. The tradition of how the jerseys are placed are a reminder that you win as a team, but individual mistakes can be costly.
In all honesty, I don’t love seeing Copp on the line with Kane and Debrincat but for now that’s what you’ve got. Defensively, he’s done a lot. On a creative rush, however, just seems like a duck out of water. We’ll see if that is addressed.
Below you’ll see some info from today’s gave between Sweden and Finland at the WJC. Sweden will compete for Bronze while Finland will look for gold. Detroit has prospects on Sweden, Finland and the U.S. and that’s a good luck. A shame for Sweden as Sandin-Pellikka has had some strong moments in the tournament, but still nice to see prospects out there in the final two games.
Let me know your thoughts. Hopefully you are enjoying the mini win stretch and some of the adjustments the team has made. 17 shots in the first period was certainly impressive.
1st Period goals:
At 6:25 Larkin scored again for the 3rd straight game, this time after the power play. After some give and go the Captain was near the edge of the faceoff dot and snapped in the opening tally. 1-0 DET
Shots: 17-7 DRW
Score: 1-0 DRW
2nd Period goals:
At 4:33 Raymond adds a power play tally after some good crisp passing. The winger collected the puck on his off wing and Detroit has a 2-0 lead
At 5:48 Winnipeg got one back. 2-1 DET
Shots: 20-18 DET
Score: 2-1 DET
3rd Period goals:
At 7:14 Debrincat added to the lead after some good work by the defenseman Holl and Gustafsson. Kane ultimately did the last minute dish as Debrincat skated toward the net for a tap in. 3-1 DET
At 16:46 WPG got back within 1. 3-2 DET
Jets pull their goalie with 2:37 left.
With 28.9 seconds left Larkin netted an empty net insurance tally after Raymond cleared the puck from the left corner behind Detroit’s net.
Shots: 29-23
Score: 4-2 DET
Sweden loses to Finland in Semi Finals 5-4 OT loss
Sweden’s first loss comes to Finland, DRW prospect Kiiskinen scores and now has 5 goals and 1 assist in the tournament. They await their opponent for the Bronze medal game. Either way there will be at least one DRW prospect in both of the medal games. Kiiskenin (Finland), Sandin-Pellikka (Sweden), Augustine (USA) and Max Plante (USA)
WJC - DRW Jesse Kiiskinen scores on the power play in the 2nd. Finland up 3-2 after 2 (had 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 games coming into this one)
