In its history, Columbus has been an interesting match up for Detroit. Rick Nash was a “Wing Slayer”, and Larkin vs. Werenski is always intriguing. To the credit of the Blue Jackets, they have outperformed expectations (as has Detroit since the coaching change) and tonight The Wings took one in the Buckeye….(puck-eye?).
The interesting part of the rebuild has been getting to a place where you have rivalries again. The two teams seem to get up for these games and the Blue Jackets looked fast from the puck drop. In the second period they cashed in 4 times capped by an opening goal from Detroit for the period and a power play tally at the end.
A lot of the first period saw big saves from Talbot but in the 2nd Columbus had plenty of speed and creativity with 3 of 4 goals being tip ins with play in tight around the net. The Wings didn’t do enough to clear the crease and were behind the play a few too many times. Still, this is a good build up for Saturday’s game. The Stadium Series has lost a bit of its luster, but a good game is a good game. Hopefully Detroit can come out and make the best of a tough loss. The team is 2-1-1 after the break, but need to take this one to heart. This is the battle for the wild card.
1st Period goals:
No goals scored
Shots: 9-9
Score: 0-0
2nd Period goals:
27 seconds into the 2nd period Debrincat opened the scoring with his 27th of the season. Compher slotting in well with that line got his 18th assist. Debrincat entered the zone with a nice self pass off the boards and drove to the net. His shot rebounded back and was collected by Compher as Debrincat skated behind the net and to the left side. JT found him with a nice pass and Cat snapped it in. 1-0 DET
At 16:38 Detroit finally gets one back on the power play courtesy of Compher’s 7th with assists by Berggren (9) and Gustafsson (14). Just 7 seconds into the advantage, Gustafsson found Berggren next to the net. Berggren found Compher right at net front. 4-2 CBJ
