If you missed it the initial proposals for next year’s season have a lot of hockey with a 3 week shut down in the middle.

Tonight Detroit will try to stay within reach of the playoffs as the Capitals come to town with a high scoring team and a player on the verge of breaking a record that I once thought untouchable. Alex Ovechkin is 8 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals. At 39, the big man averages .601 goals per game in a career over 1400 games and essentially about 2 seasons lost.

Detroit will continue to scrap as a 6 game slide now has them needing 2 points on just about every night through the end of the season. The irony, of course, was that Detroit and Washington were tied for points but the ROW put the Capitals in the playoffs last year and Detroit on the outside. The rise of the line featuring Debrincat/Kasper/Kane has been the consistent performer, while the line of Soderblom/Larkin/Raymond broke through against Vegas with some much needed success. The game winner in the shutout belonged to Johansson and it was a beauty. Detroit needs all hands on deck.

It’s a mad dash to the finish again and the Red Wings have to be ready to face the league’s 2nd highest placed team (1st in the East) and find a way to grab a win.
