The San Jose Sharks announced a pair of transactions today, claiming Barclay Goodrow off waivers from the New York Rangers, and acquiring Ty Dellandrea from the Dallas Stars.

Goodrow spent three years with the Rangers, and has three years remaining on his deal at a $3.64 million cap hit. The forward is 31 years old and scored just four goals and 12 points in 80 games with the Rangers this season.

Originally beginning his NHL career with the Sharks in 2014-15, Goodrow spent parts of six seasons with the team. After being dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020, he won back-to-back Stanley Cups, before signing with the Rangers.

While Goodrow’s contract isn’t great, he could act as a good fit in the Sharks’ forward group. Goodrow could be key in helping to stabilize the bottom-six, with the ability to play either at center or on the wing. Plus, the Sharks’ cap situation should remain quite healthy over the next few years, so Goodrow not being worth his cap hit isn’t a huge concern.

Meanwhile in the Dellandrea trade, the Sharks gave up a 2025 fourth-round pick for the forward.

Dellandrea will be turning 24 years old next month, and this season, the former 13th overall pick posted two goals and nine points in 42 games. He’ll be a restricted free agent, and will be in need of a new contract.

While Dellandrea could also act as a good piece in the team’s bottom-six, giving up a mid-round pick in a trade for a depth forward still seems a little needless. It’s not a big price to pay, but the hope will be that with a bigger opportunity in San Jose, Dellandrea can make a little more of an impact with the Sharks.
