The San Jose Sharks selected two players in the first round of the NHL Draft today, picking Macklin Celebrini first overall, and Sam Dickinson with the 11th overall pick.

Celebrini’s selection came as no surprise – he was clearly the top player available, and it was assumed from the time the Sharks won the draft lottery that they’d inevitably end up selecting him. I’ve already posted an article on what Celebrini’s selection would mean for the Sharks, which can be viewed here.

However, the Sam Dickinson selection was another great add for San Jose. The Sharks had previously traded up to get to 11th overall from the Buffalo Sabres, in exchange for the 14th and 42nd picks.

The defenseman posted outstanding numbers with London in the OHL, scoring 18 goals and 70 points in 68 games. It seemed there was a great chance he wouldn’t end up being available by the time the Sharks were selecting, and Dickinson immediately steps in as one of the Sharks’ top prospects, alongside Celebrini.

There’s still another day to go, and the Sharks will kick off Day 2 with the 33rd overall pick, but the selections were significant progress in building the organizations’ prospect pool. It’s been an active offseason for the Sharks so far – including acquiring Carl Grundstrom from the Los Angeles Kings for Kyle Burroguhs yesterday – but Mike Grier is actively turning over the team’s roster to build for a more successful future.
