Sharks sign Sam Dickinson to entry-level contract

Just days after signing Macklin Celebrini to his entry-level contract, the San Jose Sharks have now inked Sam Dickinson to his first NHL deal as well.

Dickinson was selected by the Sharks with the 11th overall pick in this year’s draft. His three-year, entry-level contract carries a $975,000 cap hit.

While Dickinson was dominant in the OHL last season – scoring 18 goals and 70 points in 68 games with the London Knights – expect him to be back with London for another season. The defenseman isn’t able to play the year in the AHL (given his CHL eligibility), so assuming he doesn’t crack the Sharks’ roster out of training camp, he’ll have to return to junior hockey. So long as he doesn’t play 10 games or more with the Sharks in the coming season though, his entry-level contract will slide.

Still, Dickinson is one of the organization’s top prospects, and getting his contract done sooner than later is a win. It’ll just be a matter of how early he can earn an NHL role.
