The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve traded defenseman Ty Emberson to the Edmonton Oilers, in exchange for Cody Ceci and a third-round pick in 2025.

Ceci is 30 years old, and has one year left on his contract, carrying a $3.25 million cap hit. The defender has been used in a top-four role during much of his three-year tenure with Edmonton, and this past season, he managed 25 points in 79 games, while averaging 20 minutes per game in ice time.

The move comes shortly after the St. Louis Blues extended offer sheets to both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.

Emberson was claimed off waivers by the Sharks from the New York Rangers before the start of last season, and ended up playing 30 games with San Jose, managing 10 points. Despite missing quite a bit of action last season, Emberson did take on a fairly large role in the limited games he did play, averaging over 18 minutes per game. The defender is 24 years old, and had signed a one-year extension with the Sharks earlier in the offseason, worth $950,000.

While the Sharks gain a third-round pick in the deal and continue to stockpile future assets, this is still a questionable move at best for San Jose. Emberson was fairly effective in his limited action with San Jose, and having just turned 24 years old, could’ve had a future with the team.

Ceci, on the other hand, has been prone to very mixed results while taking on as large of a role as he's likely to be used in with the Sharks, and won’t be a long-term piece. So while giving up Emberson for a mid-round pick would’ve been a bit of a sideways move to begin with, also taking on Ceci’s contract without getting a better asset in return certainly seems a little needless.

Simply, the pick the Sharks got back in the deal probably didn’t warrant moving Emberson while also taking on Ceci’s contract for a year.
