The Los Angeles Kings announced yesterday that they’ve acquired winger Tanner Jeannot from the Tampa Bay Lightning, in exchange for fourth-round pick in yesterday’s NHL Draft, and a second-round pick in 2025.

Jeannot is 27 years old and has one more year remaining on his contract, at a $2.67 million cap hit. This past season, Jeannot scored seven goals and 14 points in 55 games with the Lightning.

While Jeannot had a really productive first full NHL season in 2021-22 with the Nashville Predators, his production has seen a substantial decline since then. Despite the Lightning paying a massive price to acquire him in 2023, Jeannot has produced at a rate of just eight goals and 20 points per 82 over the last two seasons.

While Jeannot improves the team’s bottom-six, the context of acquiring him is still a bit of a head-scratcher for the Kings. Just after trading away Carl Grundstrom – who can provide a similar impact at a cheaper price – the Kings paid some decent assets to acquire Jeannot, who has a single year left on his deal before unrestricted free agency. It just leaves a bit of confusion as to where the Kings’ offseason plans stand.

Meanwhile, after selecting Liam Greentree at 26th overall on Friday, the Kings selected three more players on Day 2 of the NHL Draft yesterday.

The Kings selected goaltender Carter George in the second round, before trading up to take defenseman Jared Woolley at 164th overall, and then forward James Reeder in the seventh round. While the selection of Greentree looks to be a win for Los Angeles, the team has still found themselves with a thinning prospect pool, so there's a bit of pressure on a couple of the prospects turning out.
