Quick Hits: August 7, 2024

1) On the August 7 edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus looks at the Flyers potential to score more goals in 2024-25 than last season's 2.82 goals per game (27th in the NHL). Just as importantly, can the team do so without worsening their goals against average (3.15, tied for 18th). Jason introduced this topic during this week's Monday podcast with me and expands upon it in today's edition. In the second segment of the podcast, Jason has a one-on-one conversation with Flyers prospect Massimo Rizzo. Watch below or, for the audio version, click here.

2) Due to inclement weather, Flyers Charities’ Grand Opening of The Rink at Community Park originally scheduled for today has been rescheduled to Monday, August 12. For full details, click here.

3) Registration is open now for the 2024 Gritty 5K on October 26. All proceeds will benefit Flyers Charities and its giving pillars of growing the game of hockey and supporting families affected by cancer.

4) This Week in Flyers History: On August 3, 1967, Philadelphia Hockey Team, Inc., announced that the new NHL franchise had adopted the name "Flyers". Nine years old at the time, the late Alec Stockard of Narberth, PA, was chosen as the winner of the name-the-team contest. Original Flyers team president Bill Putnam meets with Alec to announce him as the winner.

The name "Flyers" was pre-selected as the team name at the suggestion of Phyllis Snider Foreman, Ed Snider's sister and the wife of Earl Foreman (Flyers team legal counsel and, at the time, a small share owner before selling their portion to Ed). The team held the name-the-team contest, with the winner being chosen among entries that suggested Flyers as the name. Alec's entry, obtained at an Acme supermarket, spelled the name as "Fliers".

On August 7, the Flyers publicly announced that they'd adopted the Flyers Fan Club -- initially comprised of former members of the old Ramblers Fan Club -- as the official fan club of the new NHL expansion franchise.
