Quick Hits: September 5, 2024

1) Registration is now open for the 2024-25 edition of the Flyers Learn to Play Rookie program. It's a low-i way for parents to introduce their kids (ages five to nine) to playing the sport with sessions available at 15 different rinks in the area. Head-to-toe hockey equipment is provided as part of the $274 per child registration fee along with the instruction sessions.

Flyers Alum Riley Cote often participates in instruction sessions, as does Flyers Alumni Association president. Rob Baer, who heads up the Flyers' youth and amateur hockey programs segments of the Community department, is the organization's program coordinator for the Learn to Play Rookie Program. The Flyers Rookie Program has introduced hockey to nearly 6,000 kids since 2016.

"We're excited to bring it to many more this season," Baer said. "Marshy's motto of teaching youth hockey is 'Work hard, do your best, have fun'. That's what the Learn to Play Rookie program is all about. It's about a teaching environment and having kids experience the joy of playing. It's a way for the kids to interact and for families to connect through the sport."

For families in need of financial assistance, Flyers Charities has also announced applications for the 2024 Flyers Charities Scholarship are open now at FlyersCharities.com as an effort to ensure all children are able to access the sport of hockey regardless of their background. Those selected will receive financial assistance for registration to the Flyers Learn to Play Rookie Program.

2) There's a special twist to the 2024-25 LTP Program:Owen Tippett and his wife Taylor will be official ambassadors of this year’s program with plans to interact with the participants and support the Learn to Play initiative. This year’s program marks the first time a still-active Flyers player has served as season-long ambassador for the Rookie Program.

I remember like it was yesterday the first time I hit the ice and it's such a special feeling," Owen Tippet said in the press reason. "Now, to have the opportunity to help introduce young kids to the game of hockey is something Taylor and I are extremely passionate about and excited to be a part of.”

3) Today in Flyers History: On September 5, 2020, the Flyers lost the seventh and deciding game of the Eastern Conference semifinals, 4-0, to the New York Islanders in the bubble in Toronto. The Flyers dominated the game's first eight minutes and narrowly missed a pair of golden scoring opportunities. However, after the Islanders got mid-period goals from a pair of unlikely sources -- Scott Mayfield and Andy Greene -- it seemed to drain all of the life and fight from Philly.
