The upswing in the memorabilia market since the onset of Covid has been stunning to say the least. Limited in where to use their “disposable income”, people have increasingly revisited hobbies from their past, or explored completely foreign areas of interest, investing their time and dollars into odds and ends from the sporting world, pop culture, and beyond.
What brings us to this site is hockey. The current boom in the industry is far less restrictive, however. While the hockey collectibles industry has undoubtedly benefited, likewise there have been spikes in interest across the other major North American sports (baseball, basketball, football), broader international sports (soccer, cricket, car racing, golf), combat “sports” & sports (e.g., MMA, boxing, pro wrestling), movies and television, politics and historical events and pop culture! Love my hockey, and my interest does get piqued by the bigger market too. So why don’t we step off the ice and see what’s getting some action elsewhere?
Autographed Jordan Rookie Card
2006-07. As part of a campaign celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Fleer, redemption cards were inserted in packs that could be redeemed for one of 23 autographed Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer rookie cards. Of the 23 cards, 14 are known to have been graded. Of those 14, the second highest graded of the bunch (a BGS 8.5) will be auctioned through Christie’s, with bidding set to close on the 14th of June.
Estimated selling price?
Somewhere in the $2 to $3million dollar US range
Star Wars Collection
Mah gurd. The nostalgia was strong with this one. An array of collectibles from a Bristol man who managed to stash away unboxed figures from the three original trilogy movies, amassed tonnes of autographs, and rounded the pile out with a selection of books and other assorted odds and ends. It was beautiful to flip through!
I tracked selling prices for the initial two pages of offerings (spanning 11 pages total), and had already exceeded $30,000/$38,000 dollars US/CAN (including a sweet $1800/$2300 US/CAN original Boba Fett figure). Do yourself a favour and
check out the auction site for the eye-gasm these pieces are.
Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Items
This one is for the sheer oddness and laughs! Sure, celebrate the platinum jubilee! Who am I to judge? But at what point are
ice cream scoops, light up keychains, Queen-print yoga pants and chocolate orange covers not getting flagged as overkill? Stop pimpin’ out Liz ya slimy bastards!!!
