Alfie Rumours Are Running Rampant!!! |
|
|
|
As the playoffs are set to begin tomorrow night I thought I would entertain you all with my picks for the first round. My predictions wouldn't be the same without first discussing a few rumours in Ottawa regarding the injury status of the man, Daniel Alfredsson. We've heard from a very good source that Alfie practiced today and had no problems accelerating during the skate. Could it be that Brian Murray and his squad are playing mind games with the media and trying to psych out the Pittsburgh Penguins?!?! I wouldn't be surprised to see both Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson play in the first round. I think that's the only chance this squad has of beating the Pens. And now... on to the picks:
In the East we'll start with, obviously, the Sens VS Pens: Sens in 6
-The Pens are a really young team with many players stuck at only five career playoff games under their belt. All the pressure is on them to beat a depleted Sens squad. They kick off the series on home ice at the Mellon Arena Wednesday night, and Pens fans are expecting something big! As far as stopping the Pens, the Sens need to shut down their big names, i.d Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. As long as Ottawa doesn't have any major defensive breakdowns and Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley decide to score some goals, the Sens will beat the Pens, just like last year :) As for goaltending, both Marc-André Fleury and Martin Gerber could implode at any minute, but experience should prevail. On that topic, Ottawa has a strong veteran presence with alot of cup rings skating around on the fingers of Mike Commodore, Corey Stillman and Martin Lapointe. The cup final experience could prove to be key in this matchup.
The Washington Capitals VS The Philadelphia Flyers: Caps in 6
No real reason except that the Caps had a miracle season and managed to make it to the playoffs. I have a feeling they want it pretty bad and I'm sure Alexander Ovechkin has a few tricks up his sleeve...what a guy!!
The Montreal Canadiens VS The Boston Bruins: Habs in 5
Hmmm that's a tough one! The Bruins have lost ALL their games against the red hot Habs this season and the playoffs will be no exception. We'll see if Carey Price can pull off a franchise tradition and take his team to the next round.
The New York Rangers VS The New Jersey Devils: Rangers in 7
These two teams HATE each other and I think it will be a long, messy first round. The Rangers dominated the Devils in the regular season, but Martin Brodeur could win this series on his own! Should be a good one.
There you have it, my picks for the first round of the 2008 playoffs. Check back for a wrap up of the first week and my west coast predictions!
À la prochaine,
