Another clutch performance by New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier.
Captain Clutch scored the game winner in overtime to lift the Devils over the Arizona Coyotes 5-4. Hischier scored his 27th goal of the season after shooting over Coyotes goaltender Connor Ingram’s blocker side after a 2-on-1.
Thoughts and Musings
1. Newly acquired forward Timo Meier finally made his debut as a Devil. He scored the game’s first goal after missing some time with an upper body injury. His goal was off a rebound and scored with a backhand shot. It will take some time for Meier to adjust to his new teammates and Lindy Ruff’s system. But, Meier is off to a great start with his new team.
2. Jesper Boqvist is making a strong case that he should stay in the lineup. With Yegor Sharangovich sitting out and Curtis Lazar eventually joining the squad, Boqvist has been aggressive around the opponents net and making the most of his playing time. With Erik Haula and Ondrej Palat, they look to be a formidable group. Lindy Ruff wants to roll four lines that can sustain an attack. And by scoring two goals, expect Boqvist to get more playing time and be in the lineup.
3. The “Road Warriors” continue their dominance on the road. The Devils have an astounding 23-4-4 record away from Prudential Center. And goaltender Vitek Vanecek is 10-0-1 on the road with his last loss coming on December 20th against the Carolina Hurricanes.
4. Dawson Mercer extended his point streak to nine straight games by assisting Damon Severson’s goal in the 2nd period. Dougie Hamilton also extended his point streak to five games.
5. Devils are only two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division with Carolina having one game in hand. The showdown meeting on Sunday March 12 at 7pm at Prudential Center will have huge playoff implications.
